2 problems

PostSat Aug 26, 2017 11:33 am

Yeah 2 problems with DaVinci Resolve that I really can't solve and can't find any useful info anywhere.
The simpler problem is as follows: I've set the GPU processing mode to CUDA (trying to solve problem 2), but now I can't open a project (an existing neither a new one), because I don't have a CUDA driver or something, anyway, I thus can't set the processing mode back at Auto.
So I thought I'd delete the preferences file, but can't find it anywhere... Any ideas how to solve this/locate the file I need to delete or change?

Secondly, when I try to add a text box or picture in the timeline, I can't see it appearing, see the picture. The settings in Inspector are just fine, other text generators (lower 3rd, scroll etc.) don't work either, deleting cached data didn't help. Another person on another computer could open it with just the metadata and could immediately see the text box with visible text.
The problem could be that my processor is kind of slow, it says "Your GPU memory is full" quite frequently. My processor is: Intel CORE m3 7th Gen.
I really hope someone has an idea as to how to fix this, because it's costing me a lot of time now and I can't really continue working on the project this way. So any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

P.S.: My project isn't that complicated, just a video with another audio file added to that (total of 7 minutes or so I guess), and I'm using version 14.0.0B.051, installed a few weeks ago and reinstalled endlessly until yesterday.

Please does anybody have an idea? Else I can't really use Blackmagic anymore and I hope that wouldn't be neccesary.

nVidia cards don't get a separate CUDA driver on Windows, and in fact installing one can cause issues.

The standard Display driver is all you need on Windows to make CUDA work.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi, you haven't supplied detail on your GPU or the driver so you could do that but also try setting the GPU to OpenCL in preferences

I'm a fan of using GeForce Experience. I find that it updates my drivers with no hassle at all, and it doesn't interfere with the Adobe suite or Resolve/Fusion.

But GeForce doesn't work with my processor, I have an intel CORE m3 7th Gen (like I said).

CUDA is for Nvidia graphics cards only, and it seems you don't have one.

Post your system specs, most likely you're trying to do something to big like 4k on an underperforming machine.

I know that I can't work with CUDA, but the problem is, how to set it back to auto, because I can't open a project and go to settings anymore.
Anyway, system specs are:
2 cores, 4 logic processors, 1.00GHz, 1608 MHz, RAM memory is 4 GB.

But thats not even enough RAM, and you give no information on the GPU.

Forget that machine for Resolve, sorry to bring bad news.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Hi all,
This is my second attempt at a first post, so forgive me if it comes up twice!
I had the same problem when I couldn't open DR14 after I changed the GPU settings. I found the answer in this thread
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=19948
Basically you
"manually remove the forced CUDA setting by editing the following file:
/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/config.dat

You will need to open it in a text editor such as textwrangler or textedit.
Look for a line that reads:
Local.GPU.Mode = CUDA

Remove this line, save the changes and resolve should load back in Auto mode."

I did this and DR started up and I was able to reset everything I had messed with!
Hope this helps.
John

I'm having the same problem on Mac. I can't open the software far enough to access the preferences. Assistance will be very appreciated.

Hi Charlie,
My post above should work for you as I was using a 2017 MacBook Pro. Removing the line in the config.dat file removes the the request for a CUDA driver on startup. DR then starts normally.

Thanks John but I actually found and posted (I can't find the post though) an easier way to do this right in the Resolve Manual.

I thought here was no way to access preferences while in the project window since the menu was greyed out (wasn't clickable) but if you use the shortcut CMD+, on Mac or CTRL+, on PC, it takes you directly to the Preferences where you can change the specific GPU Mode hardware configuration back to Auto.

I discovered this after Re-installing the software again but to still having the same crash problem. Try it, you won't have to change any DR14 configuration files. ImageImage

Hi Charlie,
Thanks very much for the tip, it's certainly a better way to solve the problem! I'll make a note of it for next time I mess things up!
