Titan X Maxwell vs 1080 (non TI)

PostThu Aug 31, 2017 11:46 pm

Thanx everybody for the input on my post about TITAN vs 1080 TI and SLI (from 2 weeks ago)

I'm buying a new card this weekend. I'm trying to get a 1080TI, but they are all a bit expensive right now. If i get a used one for around 600$ i will take it, but i will most likely have to go for the normal 1080 or a titan maxwell now.

What would you recommend in my case.
I only have an i7 4790 processor right now and my main use is davinci resolve 4.6K raw in a 4K timeline.
Playback is more important than rendering.

I know the 4790 is a bit slow too, and i will change to a Rysn 8 core in a few months. but i will change the card too again.

I get the low GPU memory warning quite often with my current 4GB gtx970 card.
Would I be better off with the slower 12 gb titan x or the faster clock but lower 8GB 1080 card?

Hi.

Have you ever considered a Titan X Pascal?
When I follow selling prices on eBay, are some of them sold only a little above the price for a GTX 1080 Ti.

In this link is a table with the differences:

I'm sure second-hand ones are going to come down soon, when all those gold diggers turn to the new AMDs…

Thanx Uli and Casten. And yes I've considered the X Pascal, but the problem is that I have to buy one this weekend and my budget was really only 400 this week but can stretch it to 500 maybe 600. I've been living in Bolivia the last few years and sending one here will cost me 300$ extra in customs and shipping. But a friend of mine is coming over from miami and will bring it in his hand luggage. Hence - have to buy it this weekend.

The good thing is that i can sell either one of them for 700$ here in a few month because electronics are more expensive here. So i WILL get a pascal or a 1080 ti later when i upgrade my entire workstation.
(=> when i get guests form the U.S. again)

In my last project GPU memory limitations slowed me down at least a week. So I just need one to work with my 4th gen i7 for maybe 3 months.

My gut says that the 12GB slower TITAN x will work better with the older processer. Kinda think that the 1080 pascal with 8GB doesn't work it too fast for my processer so i just get less VRam and he higher clock speed is useless?. Am i wrong? Should i not worry about that.

Well, in principle a system that is well balanced in all of it's components is the best.

But I doubt that a powerful GPU will be hampered too much in your machine. The CPU is doing transcoding, but the GPU is doing color processing. If you need any temporal processing, like NR, flow motion or the like, that card will fly.

Thanx Uli. YES, the color processing and noise reduction was actually my main goal of improvement. I went with a 1080. Next I will change the motherboard and get a newer processor.
