Resolve 14 & Avid Artist Mix Both HUI Compatible

Hi
How is it possible to use Avid Artist Mix control surface (HUI Compatible) with Resolve 14 Beta 9 also HUI compatible as announced?
In control panels / Sys pref there is only Midi Protocol choice. No ethernet Eucon etc.. Will there be soon?
I need to choose between Resolve 14 for all post-prod (Composing, color, mix, deliver, etc) or switching between Resolve and Pro Tools for the next new JL Godard film.
But I need to mix with a control surface, such Artis Mix that I have already. (I use Artist color also)
Thanks.

YES! MANY ARE WAITING FOR THIS! LET'S HOPE FOR THE BEST!

In fact, why not enable the EuCon protocol for control of the Fairlight page as well. I currently use Avid Artist Color via EuCon to control my Color Page. EuCon is faster, more stable and robust that both HUI and MCU.

So why not?

That said... keep up the great job BlackMagic!

Studio 14 has been a big win already!

Keep it coming!

Cheers!

FYI, Fairlight already had the HUI compatible code base and we have implemented that in v14. We don't have Eucon for Artist Mix and while it's on the request list there are a number of other projects we are working on so the Eucon support is far from close.

Thank you for the EuCon update Peter,

I have an Avid Artist Control and an Avid Artist Mix - both of which are supposed to support HUI or MCU. After choosing both HUI and MCU in the Audio Control preferences, why am I NOT ABLE to use either device to control the Fairlight page?

Am I missing something?

Kindly advise.

Thank you!

Rob

I'm not sure Rob. We don't have either device at this time to review.

Thanks again for your reply Peter.

In an attempt to help make Resolve the best it can be, I’ll gladly overnight my devices to you at my cost if you like. Considering the fact that I’m unable to use them with Resolve today, I’m sure you and your team can put them to better use than me for the time being.

Kindly let me know, as this is a good faith offer for sure.

Keep up the good work.

Best!

Hi fellows,
As well as some of you, I'm the owner of some avid control surfaces. I'm also pretty excited by the new Fairlight panel in DaVinci Resolve 14. So when I first found out that it supports Mackie and HUI protocols, I was like "Wow ! Good news !".

I'm on Mac so I went in my EUCON preferences panel, added DaVinci resolve in the list of controllable apps, restarted my system, went in DaVinci preferences to configure my controller and nothing happened...

Very frustrated at first, I checked everything, did the whole thing from zero. Still NOTHING.
Went on the internet to see if I was missing anything on the subject. Nothing usable.

While I was pulling my hair I noticed something : on the artist control, the name of the active app showing on the upper left corner of the touch screen, doesn't match the name of the application showing on the upper left corner of my macOS X bar !

According to Osx I'm running "DaVinci Resolve"
According to Eucon I'm running "Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve"

While I thought this is very likely to be the problem, I also thought how the the hell am I going to get around that.
Here's what I found :
Go in the application folder, right clic on DaVinci Resolve app and choose "Show package content", enter the Contents folder, find Info.plist and open it in a text editor. You will have to change the text so that where it says "Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve" it would says "DaVinci Resolve" instead. Save and close the file, run DaVinci.

And Voilà! It works!

There's not much you can do with the controller though : you have transport, solo, mute, select, volume fader.
I don't know the trick on windows (if there even is the same problem on this platform)
I guess I have to report this to Blackmagic...

Hope this will help some of you.

John_C_Tout...

You are the Man!

Thank you for the workaround!

Let's hope Blackmagic finally enables the full Eucon protocol!

For now, I'm happy I have SOME control!

Have a great day!

After further thinking and researching, another version of the solution consists of changing the app name directly in the Eucon settings by doing so :
go to ~/Library/Preferences/
Find com.euphonix.EuConSystem.plist and open it

This file shows the settings for every app you added in de EuCon preferences.

Edit the xml code so that the string below the key "App Name" matches exactly what Application name EuCon detects when the app is focused. In the case of Da Vinci it must be "Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve" (if you didn't change it yet)

This method might be better since you don't have to do it every time you install or update your apps.

Up with this topic.

Any additional input from you John_C_Tout ?
Happy about the way your Artist panels work with Resolve ?

Is there anywhere I can find the mapping details with such interface ?

As a new Resolve user, I'm considering the best hardware options I can have.

Currently have an good option for second-hand Artist series panels (Color and Mix).
Just wondering if it's a viable solution or not.
Plan B is saving bucks for BMD Resolve Micro and some Fairlight panel (if comes out one day ...), but playing with mouse & clicks has its limits :?

OK, so I've spent quite some time on this, but finally got it to work.

Interestingly the only way it worked for me was to use the Mackie protocol emulation, and I did the rename workaround in both suggested places.

It took about 2 hours an 50 restarts, but it works.

Keep up the amazing work BMD!

It's good to know that you'll get to proper Euphonix support at some point.

Hi all!
Please, let me know exactly the good workaround, step by step, (is it with "Blackmagic" or without?)

I try In Mackie protocol with resolve 14.2, Econ 3.7 on OS 10.12.6 on a MacPro late 2013 ...

For the moment: rien de rien... (nothing)

But, maybe, I have to reach the 50 restart that it could work...

If you have a help, please..!

Thank you

Fabrice

If you didn't tweak anything yet, go for the second solution which consist of editing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.euphonix.EuConSystem.plist file right after you added the app in the eucon preferences panel.
change it so it contains :

<key>App Name</key>
<string>Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve</string>

It's been brought to my attention that this file is in binary xml format. Therefore, it can't be edited with Textedit directly as I suggested before. I used TextWrangler so I didn't run into that problem.
Two solutions :

1/ Use a free text editor which allows binary xml editing (TextWrangler, xcode .plist editor, or something similar)
2/ Use terminal command "plutil -convert xml1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.euphonix.EuConSystem.plist" to convert the file into readable format, edit the file, then use "plutil -convert binary1 ~/Library/Preferences/com.euphonix.EuConSystem.plist" to convert the file back to binary format.

Did anyone ever get the screen on this to work in Resolve? I'm thinking about getting one of these, but I don't want to waste the desktop real estate if it's not going to work.

Hello John_C_Tout,

Your workaround for version 14 was extremely helpful. Might you have one for Resolve Studio 16? I notice my Artist Control no longer says Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve. It only says Resolve. I tried the workaround and no go. Any word? Kindly advise if you will. It'd be appreciated. I could use a quick fix until more info is announced on the newly released Fairlight Consoles. Hi Rob, Hi everyone,
DaVinci Resolve keeps evolving to this fascinating piece of software, but still doesn't go well with Eucon control surfaces...
I just installed Eucon v19.7 with Resolve 16, and... it doesn't work.
Now Eucon sees it as "Resolve" whereas MacOS (Mojave) shows "DaVinci Resolve"

Same logic except the name is to be changed to "Resolve"

~/Library/Preferences/com.euphonix.EuConSystem.plist
<key>App Name</key>
<string>Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve</string>

to

<key>App Name</key>
<string>Resolve</string>

Notice : I actually had to edit the file in two different places with the same name. I don't know if it mandatory.

Afterwards, I restarted the computer, and now, when I launch DaVinci, my surfaces wake up.

There's still so much room for improvement though. I mean, currently, the only controls you get with this system is faders with no track names, transport, mute and solo. Worst than that would be nothing at all.
Well... I guess without that little trick on macOS I told you about, this would be it: nothing...

With Blackmagic acquiring Fairlight, I guess support for Avid Eucon would not really be in there best interest.

Sorry I don't come here very often, but still, let me know how it goes for you.

Great summer for you all

I thought I would update this thread as I've been through a lot of experimenting to get my system working with my Artist Mix this evening.

Current version of Resolve: 16.2.7
Current version of EuControl: 20.6.1.3

So my 'fix' was similar to the above solutions, with the following changes/notes:

Davinci preferences --> Control Panels ---> select 'MCU Compatible' and Euphonix Port 1 for both input and output

EuControl had 'Lock to Application' set to on (ticked)(You might have to fire DaVinci up to be able to change this).

Then, I used BBE edit app (any xml editing app will do) to modify the following file in my user library folder (not the base system library folder)
com.euphonix.eucon.plist
Any entry of <string>Davinci Resolve</string> was replaced with string>Resolve</string>
saved.. EuCon restarted.. Start Resolve.. worked.

This enabled DaVinci to use my Artist Mix as a mixer. I have access to Pan, Solo, Mute, Select track (using ASSIGN SEL Y on the mixer) and track names are visible if you tap the side of the pan pot.

This level of functionality is perfectly usable for me. Very happy. In fact, it works and responds better than in Avid Media Composer (go figure).

One extra note. If I am using my Artist Mix then I am not able to use my Artist Color simultaneously. I've tried several times but I can't get them both working. Just one or the other.

I hope this helps or saves time for people.

I think that is correct. In truth, Avid has end-of-lifed the Artist Color panel some time ago...

https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/artic ... port-dates

It's technically dead as of 12/31/2020, but they made the announcement 3 years ago. I got a lot of work done with the Avid Color panel (actually the earlier Euphonix) 9-10 years ago, but I preferred the Tangent Element. There are still advantages of the Tangent over the Micro and Mini Panel if you have to use it with other kinds of software.

I actually own a micro panel, but my main employer this year (Sky UK) uses Baselight as their grading platform, so I wanted to spend time on Baselight and hence a new control surface. It only cost me £200 though.

The micro panel is back plugged in as my Avid MC, MC Color and Baselight for Avid combo crashes every time you allocate the MC Color to the plugin... thanks Avid/Filmlight...

Ideally, Blackmagic would come out with some sort of integrated Micro Panel, 8 Channel Fairlight fader device at a good price point.

Regarding my fix for the Mix 8 above, you have to go through the process often. EuControl resets itself and loses the 'lock' tick boxes needed to make the Mix 8 work with Davinci. This happens because the lock name entry has been changed to 'Resolve', and it needs reverting to 'Davinci Resolve' for the tick boxes to become active again. You can them re-tick them, revert the xml back to 'Resolve' again, and it will work.

A bit of a pain and seeming all the fault of EuControl itself.... again thanks Avid.

Hi , I am on OS Big sure with da Vinci Resolve 17 and Eucontrol 20.20.11.1.10
I tried all hacks mentioned above. But I can not get the MC Mix console working.
No problem with MC color though.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi, I've tried this method and edited the com.euphonix.eucon.plist file with BBEdit app, copy the original to another folder just for backup.
i've changed for Resolve on <string> but didn't work.
After that I can't edit the file anymore, when I open it on TextEdit or any editor (Xcode) it only contains:

bplist00-_ Discovery/LoopbackFeatureEnabledQ0

I've reinstalled Eucon Workstation several times and the text keeps the same, there are no more XML data containing <strings>, others plist files contains more data
Even with this file, Ableton Live 10 still works with my Artist Mix.
Do you know any workaround, or can you send me the contents of your file as an example?
Best regards,

Sorry for the extremely late reply!

So on:

EUCON V2022.9
RESOLVE V18.0.4

As per my instructions above. I noticed that the file that needs editing is now "com.euphonix.EuConSystem.plist"

If you go through everything, then it works with my Avid S1.. I sold my Artist Mix.

The problem of the communication link between Resolve and the mixed being lost if you open something like a web browser still exists. There is still a slight delay for the mixer to wake up after EUCON applications are restarted.

Wow! I thought I know almost everything about DVR & control surfaces but today I learned something new. I watched some old videos about the Avid controllers and the EuCon mapping software and how it interfaces into (other) LNEs and DAWs. Looks like it was too good to be true ...
