Resolve 14 "goes away" after project choice

PostFri Sep 08, 2017 3:19 am

A fresh Resolve 14 installation, under Win10, launches and presents the "pick a project" screen. After that, no new Resolve pages show up. Following the situation, using Task Master, Resolve launches and does the splash screen as background process. Resolve moves into the Apps area and shows the projects screen. Choosing any project, or creating a new project, the project screen closes, Resolve becomes a background process using decreasingly less and less CPU time until it reaches 0%. Shortly after that, the process "goes away". There's no message or indication of a crash. Resolve just "fades away".

V12.5 would, on occasion, lock up. In those cases, during editing, never delivery, Resolve became a background process, using 0% of CPU resources, but didn't "go away". It was usually possible to save the project, and then terminate the process. Relaunching Resolve 12.5, it was possible to pick up the project at the point where it had been saved previously.

Recommendations? Explanations?

Poking around further, it may be that the problem (for 12.5 and for 14) centers on the firewall permissions. This problem showed up frequently in the now-closed 14 beta area.

A) why does Resolve even care about the firewall?

B) Is there a Resolve mod to the firewall changes? They produce an "illegal" warning.

C) Is there a way to enter them manually or otherwise force them into place?

I've done some more sleuthing, and found the Resolve firewall entries for V14. This is the rule for Resolve.exe:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\FirewallRules

{790F5CF9-FF45-4A89-B189-F5980509C229}

v2.27|Action=Allow|Active=TRUE|Dir=In|Profile=Private|App=C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Resolve.exe|Name=DaVinciResolve|

This is one of the apparently invalid firewall rules (I mistakenly said illegal). Compared with other rules, it looks OK. Now what?

BUMP

I'm still looking for a response to the comments regarding Resolve and firewall rules.

All I can supply is the description of the machine trying to launch Resolve. According to the distro file info, this is V14.0.78.0 - assuming the file info is correct. As described in the initial post, Resolve runs only until a project selection is made. After that, no access to logging options, etc., etc. because Resolve has closed down without a hint as to what happened.

I offered the firewall info because during installation, error messages regarding the rules were listed in the cmd window. Unfortunately, there's no way that I know of to capture the messages.

Samsung NP700G7C - laptop
Win 10 Home
V1703
OS Build 15063.540
Intel i7-361QM CPU @ 2.30 GHz
24G RAM
Default GPU

This isn't an issue about performance or file management. V12.5 works well enough for my needs. If V14 is an improvement, fine, if not, V12.5 remains a reasonable alternative.

I am experiencing this EXACT same issue.

Beyond frustrated at this point.

Windows 10 Home
v. 1703
OS Build 15063.608
i7-3770K CPU@3.50ghz
RAM 32GB
64-bit OS/x64-based processor

Running DaVinci Resolve 14.0.0078

ANY HELP would be great as I cannot roll back to 12.5 Studio

It looks like that laptop should have an adequate GPU for Resolve 14.

Without a Resolve Diagnostics log, it's hard to know what the issue might be.

You might try updating the NVIDIA driver. If 12.5. works and 14 doesn't, that would be a likely suspect.

Jay Ness, how did you collect those logs?

FYI - This URL 404's as incomplete:

The system log URL resolves to an .nfo file.

Under 12.5, transitions are jerky, but I treat that as the wages of using a low-end GPU. Since it's in a laptop, I'm stuck with it (some versions of the machine can be updated; I don't have one). Rendered, everything's fine.

With 14, unless the presence of some version of the driver effectively crashes Resolve before reaching the main screen, I doubt it's the video driver. NTL, I'll give it a try.

Stepping through the sequence of events again:
Resolve 14 launches and shows the expected splash screens and "loading xyz module" messages. Task Manager shows Resolve is a background process (same thing under 12.5).

The project selection page is displayed, with the expected existing projects as well as the unnamed project. Task Manager shows Resolve as a foreground process (ditto under 12.5).

Selecting any project, named or not, removes the project screen, as expected.

Here's the point where 12.5 and 14 diverge.
Under 12.5 the main screen opens and is functional. Task Manager shows Resolve remains a foreground process.
Under 14, the project page is closed but the main screen doesn't show up. Task Manger shows Resolve as a background process, using less and less CPU time, until it goes to 0%. At that point the process closes, goes away, ceases to be. No error messages, no nothing. It's the Cheshire Cat fading away until only grin remains, and that disappears, too.

A footnote: 12.5 will also, with no obvious warning, change to a background process, at which point the main page's functionality degrades in different ways. Task Manager shows Resolve sitting in the list of background processes, using 0% of CPU resources. Unlike 14, the process doesn't spontaneously end. I have to end it and relaunch to get back to work. Relaunching 14 only produces the results described above.

- - - - -

I found the way to get logs without being able to access the Help menu. I'll stress test 12.5 to get the "spontaneously becomes a background process problem" logs and post them on a separate thread.

I'll re-load 14 and try to capture logs from its failure and post them here.

@dwaine Correct.

On the project manager screen if I try to create a new project it just "goes away".

if I attempt to open a pre-existing project it winds up crashing at 81% followed by the window: "DaVinci Resolve has stopped working" and I have the option to close the program.

At the Project Manager screen, press the Ctrl key and comma keys at the same time. That should bring up the Preferences window.

In System - Hardware Configuration - set GPU processing mode to OpenCL, save the prefs and restart Resolve. Can you create a new project now?

I've never gotten that far. And I've never seen the "has stopped working" message from 14.

I attempted to install Nvidia's recommended driver update - 3.0.5.22. The process crashed with a C++ runtime fault from Nvidia's installer. So much for that.

Device Manager reports the GPU as a GeForce GTX 675M, using driver v 21.21.13.7654, 29 Dec. 16.

The version numbers strike me as somewhat chaotic.

@Rick: I don't know what the 3.0.5.22 thing is you refer to. Not a valid NVIDIA driver.

Based on the long number you provided, that's NVIDIA driver 376.54.

Please try the current 385.41 driver.

Well, that's weird. For some reason, the card did not initialize in OpenCL mode.

As a last attempt, try the same thing, but select Metal as the GPU processing mode.

If that fails, please provide a log of that too.

Nvidia insists on staying in the control panel with an updater. 3.0.5.22 is what that app considered the latest update. I'll try to kill the darn panel thing again. And I'll follow your link.

No hope of a run at logs for a few hours, while I render and transcode my current project.

A clean install of 385.41 was ...um... memorable. Lots of blank screen time... I so don't like using Nvidia products.

Anyway... installing the driver has also, in some measure, broken 12.5. Instead of launching as expected, I got a caution: "No OpenCL Acceleration Hardware found" over the projects panel. That can't be good. Funny... it worked before. See above re: liking Nvidia

I rebooted (again) from a shutdown, launched Resolve 12.5 and didn't get the OpenCL caution message. The database sign-in (where does that come from???) turned grey followed with a Windows "Resolved stopped" message.

@Rick:

You got the No OpenCL message, because on that launch, Resolve didn't detect the NVIDIA GPU. After you rebooted, the card is detected, and then it apparently crashed, although nothing helpful was logged.

Did you make the .nfo file before or after you did the NVIDIA update?

Can you make another System Information .nfo and provide a link?

When you did the NVIDIA Customize install, to be able to select the Clean Install option, did you uncheck any of the driver components?

Re: Resolve 14 "goes away" after project choice

There were two reboots prior to my deliberate reboot. The driver installation did one (no idea what was going happening at the moment - the screen went black during the installation project), after about 10 minutes of black screen after the reboot (Samsung's "press F2 for BIOS" splash screen and then black screen) I cycled power. After the OpenCL I rebooted a third time. (Insert don't like Nvidia rant here)

I just finished rendering my project after breaking it off to install the new driver. That ran for 5+ hours without a problem. MediaInfo shows everything is OK.

For completeness sake, here's the Capture Log info after that run:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5_Jki ... sp=sharing

The system nfo file as of a few minutes ago:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5_Jki ... sp=sharing

AFAIK, I installed everything. The one item I would have omitted would be the audio driver. IIRC I included it, but there is a small chance I didn't. Device Manager shows 4 instances of the Nvidia HD Audio driver, all are V1.3.34.17 12/29/2016

I'd delete three of them, but that would probably break something. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Sorting out audio drivers has been a PITA on this machine. If it ain't broke...

- - - -
I'll delay installing V14 until you say it's time to install it.

@dwaine Metal is not an option on my Windows machine, I have the option of CUDA for GPU processing. Restarted with that option, no success.

For giggles I installed Resolve under Linux on a Dell Precision M6600 with a Quadro 3000M and got a similar experience. Resolve crashes after project selection. Going over to OpenCL makes Resolve start as expected and basic functions appears to work but I've not done any extensive testing. Perhaps it can give some more clue to why this is happening.

This is what I get in the log when it crashes using CUDA:

I changed to OpenCL and, at least so far, 12.5 under Win10 doesn't seem to become an unresponsive process. I won't say that this is the definitive "using OpenCL cures the problem". But there it may be the case.

Assuming OpenCL is a magic bullet for avoiding Resolve staying or becoming a background process, how do I force that in a fresh 14 installation? Remember that 14 gets as far as the project page and then goes away. That is, no access to the preferences menu item. Is there a way to use a command line to force OpenCL under 14?

FWIW, CTL+comma doesn't open preferences under 12.5. It opens the option to change the default drive and nothing else.

In response to trying to stop the multi-user login page under 12.5 (only one user here although a second account exists to support Samba), I cleaned up the registry and unwanted temp files. No obvious changes after rebooting.

The only Resolve "debris" was one invalid firewall rule.

Re: Resolve 14 "goes away" after project choice

Er, the "goes away" topic in this thread seems to have "gone away". Is there a chance the topic will re-appear?

You should be able to press ctrl + comma keys when at the project selection screen to reach the preferences window.

This proved to be the key to getting 14 running. I switched to OpenCL, from the project panel, and 14 ran with editing working as expected.

Unfortunately, playback is jerky, even though Resolve displays the correct frame rate 59.94, and the green dot that indicates that rate is being maintained. I'm not sure what's to blame, 14, OpenCL, my GPU... beats me. [/shrug]

Anyway, the "goes away" problem, for 12.5 and 14, is resolved by manually selecting OpenCL.

BTW, I stressed 12.5 with editing and rendering an hour long clip. In the past, 12.5 would have gone through "the '12.5 doesn't work right', app goes to background, and does nothing" cycle.

Maybe a look at why the shift to OpenCL keeps Resolve Vnn.nn running normally is in order. Maybe not. In my case, I consider the matter resolved.

Sigh... the above is only partially correct. Yes, OpenCL does work with 12.5. I discovered that, under 12.5, CUDA also works with my GTX675M GPU. Why it didn't work earlier is a mystery.

Under 14.0.0.78, OpenCL works but the playback is jerky. I tried CUDA and... 14 goes away. The bottom line under 14 seems to be, for me, OpenCL or nothing.

The most recent capture - new 14 install, GPU set to manual, use CUDA:
