R14 - Missing ProRes and

PostMon Sep 11, 2017 12:14 am

Resolve 14 on Windows - Updated to official and lost all ProRes delivery options. Also, any H264 variety is failing with error: "Failed to encode the video frame"

I work in a mixed-platform environment that is predominantly Mac, thus the need for ProRes (which still worked under 14 beta). Basically, DNxHD is the only format that works for me now. What gives?

Everybody is leaving Apple's QT framework behind on the PC. ProRes encoding is only available in Fusion 9 Pro (and some higher priced programs). Why not use DNxHD/HR for exchange?

Not against it, just causing headaches within our Apple workflow. For example- we use After Effects, etc on Mac, but can't open rendered DNxHD files there.

Then something is missing on that Mac, I can open DNxHD/HR just fine on it.

I'll look into it, thanks.

Any thoughts on the "failed to encode video frame" issue we are having on any of the H264 flavors?

You will get "failed to encode video frame" if you try to export 4k in the free version, as it doesn't include this option.

Just for a try I encoded 82 minutes of 4K to MP4 (container) in H.264 on a MacBookPro (2015) in Resolve 14. It went without a hiccup in about half realtime. Not bad for a two years old laptop reading and writing from a single disk.

I can read DNxHR encoded in different flavors from Adobe After Effects without a problem in Resolve 14 on a Mac. Only the flagging for full range vs video range is not always right and i need to set it by hand in "Clip Attributes".

Uli, thanks for your research!

Peter, the PC is Win7. I realize it is not supported. Honestly, Resolve is working flawlessly outside of the export codec issue I'm having.

Resolve Windows has never had QuickTime ProRes render options.

Windows 7 (and 8.1) will cause issues with rendering MPEG and H.264 files.

Dwaine, thanks for clearing that up. Just migrating from Mac, so learning that quickly..

Too bad about Windows 7. Guess it's DNxXX or back to Mac for me. For various reasons, we are locked to Win7.

ProRes is actually the must-have option. Even Vegas 15 received it recently, why not DaVinci?

Can you please show a link to that information?
AFAIK Vegas 15 doesn't export ProRes.

One friend in the closed videography group shared this info confirmed by screenshots. We are works for Getty where ProRes is the preferred codec (the only one good actually, and another one is PhotoJpeg), so, this is matter. He claimed that even have ProRes footages msde by Vegas approved at Getty.

But are they approved by Apple? They can shut this down at any time, like they did with Miraizon.

AFAIK, Fusion 9 has the lowest price for an Apple approved solution. And even that has limitations, probably imposed by Apple, as you can't do network encoding.
