No sound at all

PostMon Sep 11, 2017 10:56 pm

I tried the 14 beta and today again the released version and still have the same problem. I have a Sound Blaster card that I don't use (nothing plugged in to it), some motherboard audio, the audio output for my Blue Yeti microphone and my Corsair wireless headphones. With the beta, if I disabled the SB card, the app would just crash. With the release version it does not crash at least, but the same problem as the beta in that when I play a video there's no audio (no sound and the mixer shows nothing). My headphones are 8 bit and that cannot be changed. I read an article that you need to set the default format bit rate to the same as the video you are editing, which seems odd because the two should have no relation.

In any case, is there a way to get Resolve to use the default Windows playback device or do I have to plug in some headphones into my SB card? And if I pull the card out and disable the onboard audio, will that allow me to use my headphones? I am confused. All the other editing software I tried works, so I don't think it's an issue with my computer.

Thanks.

If it were my system, I would remove the SB card, connect a set of speakers to the the analog output and plug the cans into the headphone jack on the speakers.

The "Use system audio output" is grayed out if that means anything. And I could hook up some wired headphones, but then what's the point of my nice wireless ones? Why do I need to use a totally different audio system just to hear sound?

Got an issue where audio takes a few seconds to kick in after pressing play.

Looking at the location suggested, the use system audio output is grey and unchecked.

I have just installed 14 after using 12.5. The only issue that I have noticed is that if I change timelines in edit or go into Fairlight and back to edit, the audio fails until I do something like double click an audio object in the timeline (into the source viewer) and it then comes good. Doesn't seem to be a showstopper, just a bit of a niggle.

Hello

I have the same problem, the checkbox is grayed out. Any solutions there?
I have no sound at all at the moment, so pretty bad to create something :-)

For Nac, use spotlight to launch Midi setup. Select and configure your sound card.
Restart Resolve and see if you have system audio still grey.

With Linux you have to purchase extra hardware. DeckLink Mini Monitor pci e card...I think thats the one. Not sure why they require it...Linux has audio built in it already. Don't need another one....

I don't know if this helps at all. But in Windows I had to click in the lower right of my desktop to get a pulldown menu, from which I can choose either the Intensity Shuttle or SoundBlaster soundcard for audio output.

Hello Peter,

Thanks...I selected the DSP5Adapter and then went back to my Internal Speakers on my iMac 5K and the sound is (black) magically back. However the user system Sound option in the preferences is still Greyed out.

Still a bug in my opinion.

I also have audio playback issues.

Can BM or a user recommend a card for playback?

I shoot 4K but only monitor HD SDI. Do not need HDMI.

I would like the card to output analog audio so I can stop using the internal system audio, which I suspect is part of the problem.

I only have one slot available.

So I connected up some headphones to the SB Card and then to the internal sound on the motherboard, set them to default plus set the advanced settings to 16 Bit, 48K like my video is and still nothing.

Anyone have any other ideas? I really want to try out this software. From what I have seen (watched a few tutorials) it's a really good piece of software, except no sound on my system.

In some devices, you need to set a property to "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"
Does your sound card have that and is it set?

I have it all set as suggested. The volume is set and not muted in the app, no waveforms show for audio, no sound plays, nothing shows on the meter.

Windows 10 x64

I downloaded DaVinci Resolve 14 just the other day.

I am loading files from Canon 5D Mk IV, Sony RX100 Mk I, and iPhone 6S Plus files captured via FilmicPro app.

The Canon and Sony play sound, but the volume seems quite low compared to playback via other applications: Windows Media Player, PowerDirector 15, Premiere Pro.

There is no sound whatsoever from the iPhone clips. And the Audio timeline is blank for these clips.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

@Tyrel: Your logs look normal. The fact you have no waveforms or meter activity for your audio means that it's not necessarily an output issue with Windows. The waveforms and metering are totally independent of that.

Can you provide a link to a sample media file who's audio is not working in Resolve, so we can see if it's a media issue?

I about to create a small sample video file when I loaded one my my produced videos in Resolve and hey presto, sound. Then I tried some of the raw footage from OBS and sound there. I have not messed with my OBS settings in a very long time, but maybe I changed something? I don't know.

Regardless, it seems like I have audio now, go figure. I will try to edit my next video in Resolve and see if it works.

To the OP:

Maybe I missed this in other posts, but if you do not use the SB, why don't you uninstall Resolve, remove the card and install it again? Even if the problem persists, the system resources will not be wasted on an unused device.
