How to export/deliver for Sony ProfessionalDisk

PostTue Sep 12, 2017 1:40 pm

Hi,
I have to write my files (HD / 50i /upper field first /50 MBit) to Sony Professional Disk.
How to export from DaVinci ?

MXF OP1A with Sony XDCam MPEG Codec does not work.

thx // Harry

hmm - nobody in the "blackmagic"-world is using Sony's XDCam HD Disks ?
except me ?

(XDCam Transfer and Sony's XDCam Browser ignore the Files from DaVinci)
and of course I can't write them to disk...

Use Sony Catalyst software, forget about Resolve for this task.

There is a free version also, not sure if it will do what you need.
Exporting Sony decks compatible format is not a Resolve feature.
It's actually not a feature of almost any NLE.
Adobe Media Encoder should also do it- has has special setting to make files compatible.
It's not as easy as making XDCAM HD file- it's very strict format.

You clearly demand a lot from free software, which is primarily a grading tool :D

Hi Andrew,
the free Catalyst version is a viewing and logging tool only, so it won't do what I need.
XDCam export a feature of NEARLY ANY NLE
(Final Cut 7 since it was released 2007 {10years} / Avid since Vers. 5.5 {2011} Premiere via MEnc.)

In DaVinci (which is now advertised as succesor of FCP7) we can export MXF OP1A with XDCam HD 422 Codec, which should be fine for the disk - but it is not.

As long as this is not possible, a lot of people can't swich to R14.

btw, I don't demand it from a free software, I nearly payed 1000 $

//BM Team: that can' be difficult, pretty please fix it

I can export XDCAM MXF file to hard drive and then copy the file to ProDisc using Sony PDW-U1.

Did you select proper audio settings?
Linear PCM, 24 bit, "Render one track per channel" enabled.

I dont need to write to XDCAM disc, but I need to be able to export files that are XDCAM 1080/50i just like I can export all sort of XDCAM files from Premiere Pro. Instead I tried to export with the MXF OP1A XDCAM option from Resolve, but the tv networks cant import it into their Avids. So I have to do a convert process again through Premiere unfortunatley. Any way to avoid this ? Thanks !

This file was exported with Resolve 14.0.1:

It can be imported and linked with Avid Media Composer (tested on v8.9.2).

These are my XDCAM 1080i50 export settings:

Important: I can export correctly only 1 main bus in deliver page. It can also be Stereo (only 2 channels, so probably XDCAM Utility adds remaining blank channels).
If I need to export more than 2 channels I set a 7.1 Main bus and route my timeline tracks using patch in/out.

Ok Davide, that helps, but the audio routing in Davinci is what I find very complicated. Since I dont use XDXAM utility (since I dont burn my files to disc but only export them for AVID) I need to know the right settings to do this for example:

You are saying setting the export to 7.1 Main bus will give me the 8 channels I need that AVID can read, correct ? Ok, lets say i want to route my mono track 1 in Davinci to channels 1&2 and my track 2 with lets say a stereo music track to channels 3&4. Can you explain this step by step please ? Thank you !!!

Create a 7.1 Main Bus.
Create a 7.1 Track (we will call it A9).

Go to Patch In/Out and select Source: Track Reproduction, Destination: Track Input.
Route source timeline track/channel to the desired A9 channels.
Close Patch window and click on Input Settings for A9 track, on Fairlight mixer.
Enable Thru.

Now if you hit play you should see A9 meters so you can verify routing.

Finally assign A9 to Main 7.1 and select it as Deliver output track.

Important:
We are using Track Reproduction in Patch In/Out so audio mixer sliders will be ignored.
I don't know if something else is ignored so if you want to be sure to export everything, you could export your audio mix, reimport it and then create a new timeline with all your mixes.

I don't know if there is a better way to route timeline tracks to a single 7.1 track including track levels.

Davinci would only give me the option to create "Mono , Stereo, 5.1 or Adaptive" so I choose Adaptive and created 8 channels for the track.

Go to Patch In/Out and select Source: Track Reproduction, Destination: Track Input.
Route source timeline track/channel to the desired A9 channels.
Close Patch window and click on Input Settings for A9 track, on Fairlight mixer.
Enable Thru.

Finally assign A9 to Main 7.1 and select it as Deliver output track.

Ok, I did that, so far so good, but heres where I still get confused: If I now change the clip attributes of the track to "Adaptive - 8 channels" in order to assign the track to certain output channels, it shows the correct channel output on of track meter (see picture 1) in this case track A3 on channels 7&8

but in the main output meter it shows the signal on channel 3 and only a mono signal too (see picture 2) . I believe the routing is somehow still wrong...

It doesn't works with adaptive tracks.

If you can't create a 7.1 track then you have an old beta.
Release version allows you to create a 7.1 track.

Indeed that works, but I would call this a workaround so far. I think Blackmagic should implement this in a better way. Overall this whole routing thing seems to be still quite buggy. For example sometimes when I assign a track to different channels ,lets say 1&2 and 6&7 in the clip attributes, Davinci sometimes plays them through wrong channels. If I now save the project , exit and re-open it, it plays them out through the right channels that Ive assigned. So far from buggy.. But thank you so much for your help Daniele! At least it works somehow...

Ive also noticed that many third party plug-ins ,in my case some Waves plug-ins which usually only come in mono or stereo, would cause the track busses to re-route the 7.1. signal to a stereo signal only thus not exporting out as 8 channels. Some of the stereo plug-ins worked fine and the 8 channels were still visible in the track meters or main channel meter (depending on which one the plugs are used on), others didnt suddenly just showing channels 1&2 after inserting a stereo plug-in or even showing and playing no channels at all when inserting a Mono plug-in. So still a lot of work to do on the audio features of Davinci.

In terms of editing performance I think my trusted Premiere CC editor still is more precise if it comes to things like audio scrubbing and general going back and forth a frame or two and meanwhile listening to the audio to cut very precisely. Its not quite there yet in Davinci...
