Why no Blackmagic online store for Studio licenses?

PostFri Sep 15, 2017 4:09 pm

I'm curious why BM does not set up a simple online store to sell Studio licenses online? I think many potential user are like me and would mainly buy just the sw without any hw? For us an online store would be quite sufficient.

Works if you are on a mac, which I am not..
Also, Apple takes 30% so selling in an own online store would just be so much more profitable for BM.

ps: and mac's are so last season now :-)

As mentioned by Joshua here, this is something that would be ideal for users however, not implemented at this time. If this is something that does happen in the future, you'll see that mentioned on the forums.

I would assume that online purchasing would be really good for BM (software) business as well. Now that the price of Studio is on a very customer friendly level, revenue (and perhaps other strategic goals) are very much dependent on uptake. Simple online purchase would certainly be a criteria to convert for instance myself to a paying customer.

Thinking out loud: a licensing solution similar to Adobe's installable products where the license could be activated on 2-3 nodes (desktop + backup system + laptop) with a simple way to remove a license from one machine and activate it on an other.

Do you really want Adobe's business model?

I'd be happy to buy one license for that price, which I can deactivate on one machine and activate on another.

P.S. I fully understand that some folks would appreciate a chance to buy the license without shipping any physical box, since many countries ask massive import taxes on that.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Just to be clear on this, with the Adobe business model I did not refer to the (subscription) model for Creative Cloud, but the good old model in the days before CC. Adobe actually still uses this model on some products, eg Premier Elements (yes, I have Premier elements :-) ).

On the other hand, in order to provide a business incentive for BM to keep improving Resolve, I would think that a major update (such as from 12 to 14), in my mind would not have to be free. At 299 a pop, I think something like 12->14 could well have been 149 for the upgrade? 14.0 -> 14.1 I would expect to be free and included in the license.

Now with 14.1.1. I'm getting tempted to upgrade, any news on a proper online store for Resolve?

We have no immediate plans to change the distribution process so the resellers will ship a dongle or activation key package depending on your order.

We also have win 10 as a minimum requirement.
