Dongle not recognized Resolve 14

PostSun Sep 17, 2017 6:56 pm

Since I updated from DR14 BETA to the released version this version wants activation key. My dongle is not recognized anymore. Reboot does not help. I am on a 2017 MacBookPro 15, on High Sierra GM. We are working with Resolve since many years, never had an issue like that. This is very frustrating since we need Resolve for the studio work and there is no way to run the Studio version that is needed in our environment.

Please help.
Thanks

P.S. The dongle is working fine on a different Mac running Resolve 12.5.

Please install the dongle and reboot the laptop. This is a known issue in the current high Sierra.

Thanks for the quick answer, but the dongle is always attached and I tried the restart, but it does not change anything. Since the MBP does not have an USB2 port the dongle is connected to a thunderbold2 dock from Elgato... that worked before the update....

Thats interesting: I have cloned the internal drive of the MBP 15 (late 2016), and connected the now external drive to a 2015 MBP. Here DR14 Studio works with the same setup. So it seems it is a late 2016 MBP problem (software it worked before the update). Any idea for a workaround? We can't afford not to use a $5000 computer for grading....

I'm having the same exact issue with my 2017 USB-C Macbook Pro. The dongle is never recognized with High Sierra. Been waiting a few days for Blackmagic to send me my activation key. Dead in the water. Time is money.

Guys the latest Developer Beta of High Sierra (version 10.13.1 Beta (17B25c) corrects the issue on late 2016 and 2017 Macbook Pros where the Resolve Dongle was not recognized even after reboot.

Developer Beta 1 of 10.13 was just released and it resolves the issue of not validating license from dongle.

I just upgraded to 10.13.1 Beta (17B25c) and Resolve still does not recognize the dongle.

I have a 15-inch Late 2016 MacBook Pro I have tried countless restarts and shutdown+startups with the USB dongle connected beforehand in different configurations. Normally, I have no problem when the dongle is connected to a USB 3.0 hub that is connected to a Thunderbolt 2 dock that is connected via Apple's Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. However, I tried connecting the dongle via Apple's USB A to USB C adapter both directly to the computer and also to my UltraFine 5K display and neither worked. macOS clearly sees the dongle in System Report as "USB DONGLE" (with Product ID: 0x0201, Vendor ID: 0x096e, Version: 1.11).

Two notes which may help narrow down why 10.13.1 doesn't work for me while it does for others: this installation is an upgrade from 10.12.5. Additionally, I have FileVault enabled on the main disk (APFS). The reason I mention FileVault is that USB devices always flash / USB HDDs spin up then spin down then spin up again when going through the disk decryption at startup. I am guessing that this USB behavior might be related since it seems like the Resolve dongle has lost its plug-and-play ability...

Blackmagic Team: Please let me know if there is any diagnostic data or tests you would like me to collect/run to help troubleshoot this issue.

(The macOS and Resolve betas were working so well together up until both went to release – shame to see this happen!)

Just thought I'll bring these two threads together since they're the same issue. I've tried everything possible other than installing the new beta of High Sierra without any luck. Here's the thread I started:

Unfortunately, Resolve Studio 14.0.1 still does not resolve this dongle issue.

Re: Dongle not recognized Resolve 14

I also thought that macOS 10.13.1 Beta 2 (17B35a) solved it, but it didn't.

Immediately after installation of Beta 2 finished, I logged in and was able to open Resolve Studio 14.0.1 using the dongle. However, after a restart, I was back to the old problem.

I noticed that, after the installation of 10.13.1 Beta 2, I was not asked to enter the password for my startup disk (APFS, Encrypted using FileVault). After performing a user-initiated reboot, I was prompted to enter the password to unlock my disk, as usual; and, thereafter, I could not open Resolve Studio using the dongle.

I am very suspicious that the way that High Sierra handles USB devices during startup when the startup disk is encrypted (since many of my USB devices seem to go through two startup sequences: first when the system loads the "Enter password to unlock disk" screen, and then again after the disk is unlocked. (Since it sounds like the Resolve Dongle is not hot-swappable in High Sierra, that second USB startup process might have the same effect as unplugging and re-connecting.)

Can anyone who has had the issue fixed by Beta 1 or Beta 2 please confirm whether or not your startup disk is encrypted? (Open "System Preferences", "Security & Privacy", and look under the "FileVault" tab.)

Joseph, do you have FileVault (encryption) enabled for your startup disk?

Isn’t replacing the dongle with an Activation Key acceptable to some of those experiencing this problem?

It may be that William found the issue. (Confirmed by Ludovico) Filevault encryption, which seems when ON is creating your issues. (On specific new mac models only btw)

I also have this problem.

It's insanely frustrating and it's affecting Resolve 14, Fusion 9 and even the Blackmagic Mini Monitor.

I can't get my broadcast monitor to see anything from my software since it doesn't see the Mini Monitor, and I can't get Resolve to open since it doesn't see the dongle.

MacBook Pro 2017, High Sierra.

Already have separate tickets with support about this and so far no luck. And I feel like I'm just losing money since I can't get any of this to work.

Hi! I'm having the same issue with the dongle on a 2016 Macbook Pro 15". Everything was working fine till I updated to High Sierra. I have been e-mailing with Blackmagic support but non of the solutions they proposed worked.
They only thing they asked my to try and didn't was to connect the dongle with the official Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter. Has anybody tried this? I used 3 different adapters which I know they work (and in fact worked fine with the dongle before updating to High Sierra) and had no luck.
I installed Resolve Studio 14.1 and still not working.
Blackmagic told me to send my serial number to get an activation code to use instead of the dongle but I don;t have it anymore as it's an old dongle and I don;t have the original box anymore.

If somebody runs into the solution to this please let us know.
Thanks!!

This is ridiculous, why is it our problem that Blackmagic Design is not able to print the serial no on the dongle. Why do we have to keep the original boxes for years (I paid $1000 for the dongle)? I am not willing to buy it again or get one of the cracked versions that float around since a serial no was introduced. When we have the original dongle we should be able to get the activation code, without having to jump through hoops. It is neither our problem that Blackmagic is not able to make the dual license procedure work, nor that the serial no is NOT on the dongle.
Since we still have the problem, I am getting some kind of angry now. We already decided to postpone the purchase of two Davinci Resolve Mini Panels, till the issue is solved. I was at the demonstration of Final Cut Pro X 10.4, what looked very promising for color correction. Since we work with FCPX since Adobe changed to subscription and we dumped all Adobe products because of that, perhaps this is the time where every good thing comes to an end and we will dump all Blackmagic as well.... Time will tell.

I'm running a 2016 15" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and have had this problem since the day High Sierra was available. I have the issue on both Resolve Studio 14 and Fusion Studio 9. I've just installed the MacOS 10.13.2 beta (17C79a) and can confirm that the problem is still there. I'm using the latest released versions of both apps downloaded from the BM website. I'm using the official Apple Thunderbolt 3 to USB3 adaptor. Neither rebooting not hot-plugging with the dongle succeeds.

Thanks for the update! For now, I switched from Resolve Studio to the free version. But I will need a solution in the near future as I do tend to use the some Studio features (like denoiser) often and I spend money on my dongle which now can't use. I think Blackmagic should find a way to extract the serial number from the dongle (with a software or something) so we can get an activation code in case they can;t find a way around this issue with High Sierra.

Going to upgrade to a MacBook Pro 2016/2017 with thunderbolt 3. How has the experience been with the dongle attached to an adapter and/or hub? Otherwise I'll be looking to go the activation route. Thank you.
