Problem with flickering rendered video - no video problem

PostMon Sep 18, 2017 2:11 pm

Hi,

I have really big problem with DaVinci Resolve 14 studio.

I have new iMac 2017 (specification is in demo video which I captured and link is under this text). When I used my older MacBook pro I did not see this problem with same video sources.

My source original video is OK - no flickering is there. When I play video in QuickTime is OK without flickering !!!
When I play this video in Media mode or import that into the timeline in Edit mode or I do colorgrading in Color mode there is unexpected flickering - litle change of contrast and everytime it is in different place of video. When I use render cache "error" flickering stay in same position until re-render. Than flickering problem disappears or moves to another part of the video - so that is sign that it is not problem of video source but problem during the render process or with rendered video.

I capture this video for you: how can I show you video? I can not put here URL link WTF.

you can see my iMac specification than flickering problem and than I change some settings for new render proces and problem disappears.

Please can you help me where is problem. Thanks a lot.

I have the same exact issue. I had this problem when I was using v14 beta. I switched to v12.5 and the problem went away. But now that v12.5 automatically upgraded to v14, the problem seems to have come back. Please help! This makes Resolve unusable!

I'm using a 2012 MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

I also have MacBook pro but from 2013 with similar but not same HW - for example same GPU, and during 14 beta version I did not have this problem in free and also in studio version. This problem I can see just from 14 (not beta version) and on my new iMac. And yoes in this situation is resolve unusable and I have to use premiere pro. I contacted blackmagic support about this and they tried to help me but until now without success.

Are you both using the free DaVinci Resolve from the BMD web site? The GT 650m is quite low powered. Are you working with HD sources and HD timeline?

Dear Peter:

my case number in your mail support system is: #NKG-775-16941

So again:
I have two computers: MacBook pro 2013 and iMac 2017.
When I used MacBook pro 2013 with Davinci Resolve 14 beta (free) I did not see this problem. I was very impressed with your program not problems, nice interface, everything was OK so I decided to bought full - paid version. I used Davinci resolve 14 studio beta on my MacBook pro 2013 and again no problems.

Last week my new iMac arrived.
My iMac 2017 configuration:
CPU: 4,2 GHz Intel Core i7
GPU: Radeon Pro 580 8 GB
RAM: 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
1 TB SSD

In that time you have published not beta version of davinci resolve 14 studio so I downloaded that. My problems that I described starts.

I thought that is something with full - not beta version but as Daniel wrote he has this problem in beta too. I thought that it is something with my iMac HW but as Daniel wrote he has this problem in different computer where for example with similar HW I did not have this problem.

I can not post url in this post so please what videos that I posted in mail comunication under my case number. Thanks

And I would like to say this: I used Premiere Pro, I was not very satisfied with that, I try Davinci Resolve I was very satisfied with that so I bought Davinci Resolve studio. Now Davinci resolve with this problem is unusable so I have to work again in Premiere Pro. I try solve this problem for two weeks and no solution from your side. I am sorry but that is big shame, very big.

Hi Tomas

you can post any link here... like this.

http: //www.link with spaces in it.com

Please capture a diagnostic log from the help menu and post.

There is no automatic upgrade in any of our apps so my guess is you are using the App Store version. Is this correct?
Which exact OS is on the iMac?
Can you switch the DaVinci Resolve, Preferences, System, Hardware Configuration, GPU processing mode to.. Metal.. restart.

So you would generally recommend Metal on a 2017 iMac, Peter?

it change with every render proces, sometimes just move to another part, than sometimes disappear or stay in same position.

Than: I have SW from your web no from App store. Daniel Kwan wrote about automatic update.

When can I see problem it is with every possible preferences about GPU: Open CL, metal, automatic ... everything I tested.

My problem was on latest version of OS Siera.
You can see my specs on this video where I describe problem too:

Hi Tomas, can you disable the mac display profile option, its in DaVinci Resolve hardware preferences.
Also try disabling cache and see if either or both of these assist.

I'm also experiencing the same issue. Have tried disabling both options but neither have provided a solution.

Currently running on an iMac 5K 27" 2015
CPU: 4GHz i7
RAM: 8GB 1867 MHz DDR3
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB.

Uploaded my log to the following link:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Tbb2z ... JmFL0FRcKh

And a link to a video showing the flickering happening on a random clip on my timeline.

Sorry for the bump but has anyone figured out what the issue is and whether it can be fixed?

Using resolve as an editing+color software where there is an underlying issue with the way the contrast in the clips jumps randomly back and forth kills any chance it can be used on any bigger production shoot where reliability is key.

Please provide a link to a source footage clip that exhibits this issue.

Also provide a Resolve Project Export .drp using that source clip.

Also provide a Resolve diagnostics log (Resolve Help menu - Create Diagnostics Log on Desktop).

Hi, unfortunately I have the same problem, Mac Mini 2015, Resolve 15.
The problem has appeared in my project when I added some graphic and text, when I do some editing it disappears or move to other positions, some clips are brighter than normal and this is random too.
With this bug software is useless, can't lose more time.

Regards, Marcin

I don't know of any Mac Mini that can handle more than HD in ProRes to a limited degree, and even then only the most recent models. They have an underpowered GPU for Resolve.

Get less demanding software, like Lightworks, for example.

Uli, for simple viedeos and resolutions I deal with this configuration is enough, it's not the case, Resolve is the best soft I've used, Lightroom due to huge amount of bugs is crap. The problem is random flickering in version 14 and it is not only mine, so I'm still waiting for the solution.

Can you try to go back to 12.5 and see if it has the same problems?
If not, it's the hardware needs of Resolve, which increased in recent versions.

I'm still on 14 but wondering if 15 with new features and integrated Fusion has made a significant increase in hardware demands which may require hardware upgrades to run. BMD has made performance improvements and hopefully will improve 15 (plus stability). Is it Fusion? If so maybe integrated Fusion should be an option??
User feedback appreciated from those who have upgraded.

Fusion is still a work-in-progress and if in doubt, you can use the standalone version by VFX Connect.
But in my experience it only increases the need for system RAM. The crashes described here with particle systems and a "GPU full" error, even on a machine with 8 GB VRAM, seem to be a bug that needs fixing.

Yesterday I opened the the same problematic project and you know what? All media clips have returned to heavier (normal) contrast, no flickering, no contrast changes, I've rendered it and everything looks good. And I have still the same Mac Mini. Magic (?) Earlier I've copied whole Timeline to a new one, as somebody suggested - it didn't work but after reopening after few days the bug went away. Weird.

One more opening of the Resolve (exactly the same project, no editing) and again some clips are brighter than sources and problem with random contrast/brightness changes is back! :D

Have fun fixing it;)

Did you ever manage to fix this? I'm running into the same issue, where if I use the blade tool or amend the start/edit point of a clip, it over-saturates some of the clips. For example, if I split a clip using the blade tool, the first half might look normal, but the second has increased saturation. The colour panel shows that nothing has been changed in any of the nodes, but in the RGB display there is clearly more contrast for the affected clip.

Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm on an iMac in Resolve 15. I've deleted all render files and optimised media, but it still seems to be storing the colour changes.
