Extremely glitchy interface / mouse jumping around

PostWed Sep 20, 2017 12:23 am

With the release of v14, I was really looking forward to switching over to Resolve as my all-in-one editing/audio/coloring app, but I'm having some issues that are making it nearly impossible to use it for anything.

With this latest update, I'm experiencing extremely erratic mouse behavior. It tends to occur when I release the left mouse button (or rather the left side of my magic mouse). It also occurs using the trackpad. It seems like the cursor's location on the screen is randomly jumping around when I interact with settings. Any point of interaction is susceptible. Color wheels, curves, clips in the timeline, nodes- you name it! Even menus don't function properly.

This behavior does not show up in any other software on my system, only Resolve. I've tried using a new user account to rule out conflicting software issues, but the jumping still occurs. I've also completely reinstalled Resolve to no avail.

I made a screencap video of the problems I'm having and uploaded to YouTube, but the forum is saying I can't post URLs. So, I'll just put this here for now: watch?v=JS5Du_2ssyE

Up-to-date system specs are in my signature.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You can post URLs once your post count goes over 10 or 15, I think. It's an anti-spam provision in the forum software.

Really weird behavior...
I did see a post somewhere here or on liftgammagain where someone had a similar strange problem, but you having it also seems no coincidence anymore. There most be some weird combination of issues that results in what you see.
Instinks says busted mouse or trackpad, but as you do not have it in any other software that seems of the table
Can not think of anything concrete atm.

edit : could it be anything to do with the touchbar somehow ?

Not sure, but 14 is the first version where I've experienced this problem after running previous versions on the same laptop.

I dont have a mac with touchbar but i though i saw somewhere that 14 supported some special touch bar functions. Thats why i though of it as different compared to 12.5. Is there somewhere in your system setting where you can completely disable the touchbar and see at least if it makes any difference or at least to exclude that from the equation

edit : actualy googling tells me that extensive touchbar support was already in 12. Anyway worth checking as cant think of anything besides your mouse itself that can generate these jumpy moves.

I am having the exact same issue. I've "disabled" my touchbar for apps, and tried both my trackpad and magic mouse. And still, whenever I try to make an adjustment on the wheels, curves, or even drawing a power window the control point jumps to the top of the screen, wheel, or curve. It's not 100% of the time, but about 1/3 of my clicks/adjustments will go wild. I'm not having issues in any other software.

I also noticed if I try moving my project settings window around it will shoot down to the bottom left of my screen, if I move it again, it will go off the screen completely.

I have deleted my mouse and trackpad preferences and restored everything to their defaults and the problems persist. Its made Davinci unusable for me.

Wow , that sounds horrible indeed and as a huge mystery at the same time.
Hope the cause is found soon for this weird behaviour wherever it may come from .
But sofar i have only heard if from people using those macbooks with touchbar.
Maybe some crazy driver conflict.

Seems like we have pretty much identical hardware/setup. Good to see I'm not the only one but also sorry 'cause I know how big of a pain this is proving to be.

Does anyone know if a bug report or something exists for this somewhere already?

Hey there,

I had a similar issue. Turns out it was a program called better touch tool I was using. Since disabling it I have had no issue.

It was fine in all previous versions of resolve, but caused issues in 14.

Just in case you are using it also..

Man, I did have BTT a while back, and I was hoping maybe it was lurking in my system still, causing this problem, but apparently, I got rid of it a while ago. Maybe that does mean it's a software conflict going on somewhere.

yeah maybe try running appcleaner or something in case there is a remnant of BTT floating somewhere? I remember there being a bunch of files related to it across multiple directories.

But maybe it is something else in your case.

It al feels too wierd and too specific focused on crazy mouse movements to be a general resolve issue.
Forums would have been flooded for months now if it was.
This only confirms my initial suspicions that something else attached to the mouse driver is influencing/interacting/fighting with resolve.

Re: Extremely glitchy interface / mouse jumping around

So here is where I'm at on this:

I have my old 2013 MacBook Pro (no touchbar) that is identical software-wise to my current 2017 Macbook (I cloned the old one to the new hardware) I've never had any apps directed at my trackpad/mouse as far as I can tell.

I ran Resolve 12.5 on the 2013 - no mouse/trackpad issues.
I ran Resolve 14 on the 2013 - no mouse/trackpad issues, so that was cool.

So I went ahead and installed 12.5 on the 2017 and sure enough, it ran just fine - no errors (yet). So I'm back to 12.5 until the bug is smashed. I turned my Touchbar back on and 12.5 still works, I'm looking for ways to break it now.

So I think the issue lies somewhere in the combination of 14 and the new MacBook pros. It might be a driver issue, but it seems strange 12.5 runs smoothly. I don't know enough about drivers or software development to make any sort of statement on what could be the issue.

I did look through the forum (quick searched "mouse") and did notice the error popped up a few times in the giant 14 beta bug thread. The response was generally "Apple is bad at drivers" - I can't post links yet otherwise, I would post them. Unfortunately, that wasn't very helpful.

Hopefully, this helps narrow it down in some way.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll do some more testing myself and see if maybe we can't figure out the source this problem since it doesn't seem like it's going to be high up on the priority list of either Apple or BM.

Hi Brian,
I'm using a 15" 2017 MacBook Pro (with Touchbar, 3.1GHz Intel i7, Radeon Pro 560 4096MB) running macOS Sierra version 10.12.6) with an old Logitech WIRED mouse and have had no problems with Resolve v14.o.o.o78, free version.
If you have a wired mouse, maybe, you could try this, it might help to narrow down the problem, eliminating Bluetooth. I dug out an old mouse as the Magic Mouse lacks a centre button so I didn't buy one as I had intended.
Hope this helps.

FOUND IT!

It was an app called Magnet (itunes,apple.com[slash]us/app/magnet/id441258766). For some reason, it was running in the background on my test and guest accounts. As soon as I quit the app in activity monitor, the issue stopped. Didn't even have to re-open resolve.

Hope that's helpful to you guys. Definitely seems like we're getting more and more confirmation that this is software not playing nice together. Bummer, too, 'cause I really liked being able to dock my windows :(

I'd be very careful with any software that changes the original GUI.
NLEs need a very responsive GUI even under heavy load, don't fiddle with it.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
