Collaborative workflow in Resolve 14

PostWed Sep 20, 2017 10:35 pm

We are eager to try out the collaboration tools in Resolve 14, but we do not have shared storage. Is it possible to use exact copies of the media on separate workstations (identical folder structure and file names) and still use the collaborative workflow?

Assuming two users, do both have to purchase the Studio version, so a total of $600? A recent email blast from Grant Petty seemed to indicate that one activation code would unlock the software on two systems you own...

You really should not attempt it without shared storage. I'm not sure it's even possible, but if it is, lots of features will not be able to work, and you will find it very a difficult and confusing experience.

I don't know about two workstations per activation code, since the codes aren't quite shipping yet.

You need two licenses because you will want to have them up at the same time.

In theory, of the two drives are absolutely mirrored it could work, but i do not advise it.

Why not share a database on one machine? You don't need a dedicated server.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Can anyone offer any specificity as to why it's not advisable?

It is very easy to go out of sync if the material is not exactly in the sane path. Also probably the cache will be always broken.

I think this should generally work, you still need to use a common path for stills if you want to share them across the machines, but you can configure a SMB share for this.

We did it a couple of times. Color machine remote and edit machine local, two twin san, fiber optical between them, (600 miles apart), shared database.
1) the shared database is faster closer to the machine you pour it, the color machine open a database in 30 sec, the edit one in 5 minutes at the time.
2) cache wad not synchronizing well, most of the tinge needed to be
3) stills where also finicky

Thanks for your feedback guys. Good point about the cache. Indeed that would be a problem, but I suppose I could disable it altogether (not ideal).

I would love to find a way to make this work well. And if it's not possible, is there a shared storage solution for two MacPro towers for under $1000? I already have the drives.

Probably create a San like drive...
