PSA: AMD Threadripper and Epyc CPUs are (maybe?) supported

I was planning to build a new DaVinci Resolve workstation using the new AMD Threadripper CPU, but BMD USA support put a damper on things:

Please be aware that Blackmagic Design does not optimize code or tests for the AMD CPUs. Only Intel CPUs are officially recommended. We cannot guarantee trouble free operation of the systems built with or based upon the AMD chipsets and processors.

As far as the graphic cards are concerned both NVIDIA based and AMD based GPUs are supported. The choice is yours in that respect.


Resolve is unstable as it is, so I don't know if I should take a chance on an AMD CPU or not.

BMD support replied again correcting their initial e-mail:

It came to my attention, since my reply earlier today, that there was some testing done with Threadripper CPUs and that they appear to function well with a current version of DaVinci Resolve.
At this time this is not reflected in the current version of the configuration guide.
If you are experiencing any specific issues with this setup—let us know.

I plan to update the Config guide to inc the AMD Threadripper as we now have one here are as the note says, performance looks ok.
We don't have the EPYC at the moment so no commitment on that one yet.

Interesting. I was also leaning towards AMD for my next build, since the current offerings of Intel are not exactly stellar (heat conduction problems, not enough PCI lanes, etc). Especially now, that AMD seems to commit to Thunderbolt. Let's wait and see.

This looks cool. One of the first solutions where you can easily use NVMe drives properly.

A NVMe drive/raid still doesn't make any sense to me, wehen it comes to video postproduction.

It doesn't mean it makes no sense at all.
Do you have nicer idea to provide playback of 8K EXRs?
There are projects which need 10GBytes/sec+

For some companies it does make perfect sense.
They work on 8K projects and need realtime playback of DPX or EXRs. You either do it locally or face investment which even top VFX Lodnon houses are not really willing to take atm. Those projects are still to rare.

I know this thread questions AMD Threadripper line, but I have been using the AMD FX8370 without any problems. Resolve is very stable. Sooner then later I would also like to upgrade to the Threadripper if Resolve doesn't conflict with them.

I just completed a Threadripper + GTX 1080 Ti + Decklink 12G build. Everything works fine, but ...

Here is a gotcha which took me many hours to figure out, maybe it will help other people. I used this motherboard: GIGABYTE X399 AORUS Gaming 7 sTR4 AMD X399. If you place the Decklink 12G card on the first PCIe slot the PC will always refuse to boot / POST. I figured out that this motherboard expects the GPU to be placed in the first slot. As soon as I placed the Decklink in the second x16 slot everything started working fine.
