DV25 import issue

PostFri Oct 13, 2017 12:09 pm

Hi,

I am using trying to import DV25 videos (originally capture with a Sony Digital 8 camera) into a DaVinci Resolve project, but nothing happens: no error message, and no video loaded.

Any ideas on what might be happening?

Thanks a lot,
Pedro

I have the same problem. Any advice or insight? I might have your solution, see below...

In response the rather, um, terse reference to needed info for troubleshooting:
  • late 2013 iMac - 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 24 GB
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
  • Resolve Studio 14.01.008
  • Video was DV25 from a Sony DV camera... Had previously been captured and transcoded to Prores HQ.

I discovered my problem: files that failed to load didn't have a ".mov" filename extension. Adding .mov to each fixed it! I had been flummoxed, since these QT files all play in the finder, and are ingested by Avid, Premiere, and FCP X with no hiccups - and show in Resolve's Media Storage browser as if Resolve saw them as QT video files. But no...

Further information:

DaVinci Resolve 14 v14.0.0.078
OS Windows 10 Home 64-bit v1703
Notebook Dell
processor Intel i3-5015U with Intel HD Graphics 5500
memory 8GB RAM

As stated above, if I try to import an avi file with DV25 content (captured thru a Digital 8 camera, which is the same format as MiniDV), nothing happens: no error message, no import.

Same thing with mpg (mpeg1) files.

Thru the Media Storage workspace, those files do not show up at the browser window.

So far, I have only been able to open .mp4 and .mov files (H.264 content).

Any insights?

Thanks a lot,
Pedro

The screenshot below shows Media Storage browser showing just 1 mp4 converted from the original avi, whereas the Windows Explorer shows there are plenty of avi's at this very same folder, that Resolve simply ignores.

Resolve supports QT DV25 (.mov), but apparently not .avi. You'll need to convert these files to another format.

Resolve does not load most AVI files and as you have seen, if it sees a file that it cannot load it does not show it at all in the browser. You can rewrap the AVI files to MOV files and they will load into Resolve.

Thanks for the tip, John! It worked!

I used ffmpeg -i input.avi -c copy output.mov to change the container from avi to mov without reencoding.

It is kind of sad thou, that Resolve have issues with such a popular container like avi!

Thanks, David! Did that, and worked!

Resolve can't work with DV AVI?

That's not right.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.
