Will a nVidia GTX 1060 6GB allow me to render 4K again?

Hi.

I used to be able to render my drone videos at 4K with Davinci Resolve 12.5 without issues. Since my computer is old and cannot handle the original H264 videos at 4k, I had to edit/grade using a low resolution timeline (1080 or sometimes less) and optimized media at a quarter resolution. Once my corrections were done I changed back the project timeline resolution to 4K and exported the video at a final 4K render resolution.

This workflow has worked for me for months but when I try it in Resolve 14 I always get "GPU memory full" error, even with very few correctors. The videos are exported but with many artefacts. It seems Resolve 14 requires more video memory than 12.5 for the same tasks.

My GPU has only 1 GB of VRAM so I guess it's time to upgrade it. I've been offered an nVidia GTX 1060 6GB for around 200 USD and I wonder if those 6GB of VRAM will be enough for me to be able to render in 4K again using Resolve 14. I'm not expecting to be able to work with a 4K timeline, just to be able to export at 4k like before, although I also would like to know which kind of workflow improvement I could expect from such card.

Here are my current system specs

CPU: Intel i5-2500K @ 4.5GHz
RAM: 16 GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600MHz (PC-12800)
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 OC 1GB GDDR5
GPU BUS: 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16
Scratch disk: Crucial M4 128GB SATA3 SSD
Storage disk: Samsung Evo 850 500gb SATA3 SSD

My videos are all MP4 3840×2160 24p 60 Mbps H.264 and I would like to export them in the same exact format.

Thanks!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Just wondering Javi if you did end up getting the GTX 1060 6G and if so is it sufficient for exporting your corrected/graded 4k drone videos?

My usage for Davinci Resolve 14 will be very much the same and am currently looking at getting dual GTX 1060 6GB cards.
Resolve 18.5.1
Win 11
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 Motherboard
Nvidia Geforce 1080Ti 11GB
2TB NVMe (boot & scratch)
48TB Media Drive (PrimoCache: 4TB NVMe as L2 cache, 3 x 16TB EXOS SATA as data)
64GB DDR4 (32GB as PrimoCache L1 cache)

Indeed I can confirm that getting this card worked for me. I edit UHD compressed footage from a Sony PXW-X70 cam and so far after a week of testing, it solved all the GPU memory error messages I used to get with DR 14 and my AMD R9 280X with 3 GB of vRAM.
I got an EVGA SuperClocked half size card for about $270. It is totally quiet and monitoring it shows that its GPU is being used quite a bit during editing and rendering. It seems that for what I've done so far, 6 GB is overkill and I could have tried a GTX1050 with only 4 GB. But I may start to push DR 14 further and have some (frame)buffer to play with.

Core i7-4790k 4 Ghz
EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6 GB
BlackMagic Intensity Pro 4k

Hi
I'm using a hackintosh with an EVGA GTX 1060 SSC 6GB. 4K footage from a Phantom 3 Pro plays smoothly as long as I don't add too many nodes/LUTs.
I wanted to see if playback/export would be faster with a GTX 1080 (twice the number of CUDA cores) but the gain was almost nonexistent. Like 4 seconds on a 4 minute export. Playback was 2 or 3 fps faster. I thought it would speed up LUTs and stuff, but apparently it doesn't.
I can remember getting the "GPU memory full" error 2 or 3 times, but I put it down to some bug with sleep/wake of the computer. It works well otherwise.
I need more CPU cores.

Thanks for the thread. I have dual 1060 6gb cards. I was about to go buy a gtx 1080 ti. Now I won't :-)

With a 1080 GTX Ti, performance is better than what I got with dual 1060 6GB cards.
Worth the upgrade especially at current prices.
