scene cut detection not working

PostWed Oct 25, 2017 8:09 am

Hi,

Can someone tell me if scene cut detection won't read certain files?

I am trying to cut a quicktime .mov file and nothing happens when i click on 'scene detection'.

it is not greyed out, it just doesn't do anything.

I have used it successfully many times before.

How is the threshold (purple horizontal bar) set? This will have an effect on the number of shots and the parameters affecting where the split occurs.

I personally have lobbied for an intensity control that would temporarily add more contrast when the scene-detect mode is activated so that it looks at a more "normal" picture from Log files. No luck so far.

I'm having this issue too with a .dpx file in Resolve 14. Scene Cut Detector doesn't even open–can't access threshold settings.

Update: my work around is to do it in Resolve 12.5... Seems like a bug in 14

I think it's not really meant for RAW or log files. Normally you'd use it with finished edits coming in as a whole movie, which needs an overhaul by some grading. For such a task it works quite well here.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Understood, but it would be pretty cool to be able to add a LUT to a source file before bringing it into a bin. This way we can see log footage more accurately, and scene cut detection would work use the proper looking footage.

It's working fine on my machine. I hate to ask the obvious, but have you guys read the manual starting on page 227 for how to use the scene detection? I imagine you have, but I thought I'd ask just in case.

Collin, have you carefully followed the manual on how to use scene cut detection? It's always worked fine for me, FWTW.

Which version of Resolve? What OS? What hardware (CPU, GPU, RAM, I/O)? What type of source files?

I just went through and "notched" (as we used to call it in the 1990s) an entire 100-minute feature last night from 2K 444 ProRes files, and it went fine. This is on Resolve 14.2, OSX 10.12.6, 12-proc dual-D700 GPU Trashcan Mac and Desktop Video 10.9.7.

Be aware that not all Quicktime MOV files are identical: this is just a container, not necessarily a file format.

also you can only notch a clip that had been NOT imported in the media yet.

And that is a beef of mine: i want to be able to cut anything, even if it is already in a timeline.

Walter, the question with working on a timeline is what happens to the original clip(s) in the media pool? I imagine you don't want that original material in the media pool to be cut up into smaller clips.

What you probably want is the ability to have scene cut detection to automatically place new cuts/edits in a timeline that you've selected, if I'm following you correctly. Yes that would be very helpful.

Yes, it is not dissimilar to make a cut by hand, just have it done automatically

And it would be cool to have it respect and In to Out range and track selectors.

As far as I know, the correct way to launch the Scene Cut Detector is to select a file from an external drive from within the Media Page, right-click on it, and the contextual menu has "Scene Cut Detector" as the 6th choice down:

I've never done it any other way with Resolve. I just started a brand-new film today and scene-detected five reels of about 105 minutes of material in Resolve 14.2, and it was fine. I could quarrel that it missed a lotta shots and also continues to have the flaw of inserting multiple single-frame cuts in a fade-in/fade-out, but it does essentially work.

Marc is correct. The workflow, scene cut menu, lets you get back to the scene cut page if you have previously loaded the clip as Marc described without loosing your cut data.

I agree, that is a bit frustrating, but I think I prefer that to the scene change being missed altogether on a fade-in/out or dissolve transition, as some NLE's with a scene detection feature tend to do.

The zoom slider does at least make it easy to home in and expand the spike cluster on the scene detection timeline and delete the unwanted splits. What would be helpful though is if a delete option could be added to the scene cut listing either as a single action (say right-click >menu) or via check boxes to mark multiple entries for deletion. Having to go back to the one Delete button at the bottom left of the Scene Cut Detection panel each time, I find a bit tedious.

I really respect ALL of the work that's been and continues to be done with Resolve!

I do really wish/hope that they adopt an overall design philosophy that every single command should be able to be accomplished via the keyboard. Coming from Avid, Resolve's reliance on the mouse definitely slows me down. So much so that I still use Media Composer on many projects.

The keyboard is to Avid editors what the control surface is to professional colorists. We simply rely on the keyboard for quick navigation and executing functions under tight deadlines.

Very hard to argue with that. I would love to be able to set an "in" and an "out" point for a clip already imported and then be able to click a button and say "scene-detect the selection."

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. It had been so long since I'd last done it, I was just going to the Window tab and trying to do scene detection from there.

The reply which said about doing it from the clip directly on the drive triggered my memory.

Thanks again.
