Odd 1080i60 issue in 14.0.1 and 14.1

PostTue Nov 07, 2017 5:04 pm

Hello, I'm a relatively new user with Davinci Resolve 14, but I have been encountering the oddest of issues with some video footage I've shot previously. The camera the footage in question comes from is A Nkion D7100 shot at 1080i60 in 1.3 crop mode and it constantly gives me a media disconnected issue between frames. The file info is as follows:

What's even stranger is that the same settings, minus changing it to DX (normal) mode that defaults it to 1080p30 results in footage that does not produce the same problem.

This leads me to wonder if the codec that's processing the video in Davinci Resolve 14.0.1 is somehow reading the footage incorrectly for the 1080i60 video file, but not for it's 1080p30 counterpart. I also recorded a test video at 1080i50 just to check and it's having the same problems, but nowhere as often as every other frame.

Has anyone else had this issue before with Davinci Resolve? Is there something I can do to edit the footage I have shot at 1080i60 without having to convert them with something like handbreak or another tool? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What hardware are you using? What OS? What i/o?

There are a lot of factors that can affect performance. In general, throwing a lot of money and bigger hardware at it will solve a lot of these problems.

Generally, I think it is a wise idea to transcode MP4 files to ProRes (on Mac) or DNxHD (on PC) to get better performance, because of the overhead involved in decoding MP4 files.

Hardware is as follows:
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • AMD Phenom II 1055T 2.8Ghz (OC capable)
  • 32GB Ram
  • EVGA Nvidia GTX 960 w/4GB VRAM
  • Samsung SSD EVO 500GB main drive, videos and photos stored on USB 3.1 drives (5TB, 2TB)
I tested having the video on my main SSD drive and on both of the external drives they are located on, including the SD card they were recorded on. Every single drive would show the file in the media storage locations and even drag into the library for testing in my test file, but only the 1080i60 and 1080i50 files give the "Media Offline" issue every other frame or less with the 1080i50 files. The problem also persists when using the option to make optimized files within Davinci Resolve. Examples shown here

1080p30 does not and they decode, edit, and encode to other formats without issue.

On the bright side of things, I did manage to use handbreak to transcode my test file into a usable format as for the purpose of trying to figure out what was going on, but I also have a lot of old footage that I've shot that would mean eating through a lot of space just to be able to begin the process of editing, which I would rather avoid.

So, just an update on the issue with 1080i60 video files not decoding or being exported out with adjustments.

I went and downloaded the last update of Davinci Resolve 12 (12.5.6.017 to be exact) and all of my test footage and previously shot material shows up just fine inside of the program. It doesn't matter if the media is on a slow drive or my ssd either, it plays fine in the preview windows during import, during edits, and exports without the dreaded "Media Offline" between frames. This just tells me that the updated codecs used in 14.0.1 somehow break compatibility with these files and should be addressed.

I'd like to go back to the latest version, but until that problem is fixed at some point, I can't see myself doing that. Hopefully, this will help people having this issue.

**Edit** Tested against the just released 14.1 release and it has the exact same issues with my 1080i60 files. UGH!
