Best ProRes LT alternative on Windows?

PostTue Nov 14, 2017 4:19 pm

Hi, I wondered what is the best ProRes LT alternative on Windows. I usually transcode CinemaDNG to ProresLT on a Hackingtosh which I think offer a very good balance for my need. but I will traveling for a while an need to change my work flow a bit because I will be using a Windows Ultrabook.

I need to transcode 10 bits so the only two alternatives I had founds are on Davinci Resolve WIN are:

1)Grass Valley HQX
and
2)DNxHR HQX 10 Bits

The Only problem is file size are twice as bigger as Prores LT so Backing up the footage will be sort of an Issue. Any other alternatives?

Ten bit Pro Res LT sounds great, but realize that it is choking the codec to record ten bits at such a low bandwidth. From Apple's Pro Res White Paper:

"All Apple ProRes 422 codecs support up to 10-bit image sources, though the best 10-bit quality is obtained with the higher-bit-rate family members—Apple ProRes 422 and Apple ProRes 422 HQ."

In Windows really DNxHR HQX is the way to go because it is ubiquitous and well known. Grass Valley might be higher quality, I really don't know. FWIU, GoPro Cineform is supposed to be higher quality, so maybe that's an option. But realize that you will be using a codec that's not so widely supported, even within the Resolve community.

I've always liked Cineform for transcodes and proxies. The Least quality setting should serve nicely.

And Cineform went open source recently – not bad for keeping an archival copy.

Hope this help:
From release note 14.1:
• Added support for GoPro CineForm as a caching and optimized media format

CineForm is not dead ... :)
