Export Quicktime with 5.1 audio DVR 14.1

PostFri Nov 17, 2017 12:23 pm

This has been brought up earlier, but there were many versions of this, some easy, some complicated. So I did some tests and came up with a simple step-by-step method.

1. Import sources. Video as QT/DPX/TIFF/EXR.
2. Import audio, most commonly 6 mono tracks L, R, C, Lfe, Ls, Rs.
3. Create sequence with 6 mono tracks.
4. In the menu go to Fairlight > Bus Format
select Main 1 format as 5.1

5. In the mixer, set track pan as (for most common track order L, R, C, Lfe, Ls, Rs)
1 to L front
2 to R front
3 to Centre front
4 to Centre front, and set Boom to On and 0.1 (double click the Pan area to get these settings)
5 to L rear
6 to R rear

6. Play back the track once to ensure all 6 are playing in 6 different tracks.
make sure there's no 'leak' by 'soloing' each track and previewing the audio meter.
7. In the deliver page set Output track as Timeline track 1 Mono
Click the '+' and add more tracks and set them to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

8. Export.
9. To be sure, re-import and check the file to ensure all tracks have been correctly placed.

As a follow up on my original post (and because you can't attach over 3 pictures), here are some more inputs. (pun unintended)

If your pan settings are fine, then the mixer's pan section will look like this.

And in portions where all 6 tracks have content, the mixer levels look like this. (scroll down to see the levels)

And finally, here is a sample track before and after. On the left, what I assembled as video+5.1 and exported. On the right, the export, brought back into DVR to check.

I can't seem to avoid C leaking into LFE.

This is good info. I have two questions.

1) Why do you need to do this vs. just exporting the 6 tracks separate? Like we did in v12.5 and also in Premiere and Avid?

2) Also is this also what needs to happen if using EasyDCP plug in for DCP creation.
