Upgraded to GoPro Hero 6 but cannot open H.265 files

PostMon Nov 20, 2017 2:24 am

I just upgraded my GoPro Hero 4 to the Hero 6 and discovered that the Hero 6 uses the H.265 codec for the 4K @ 60fps and 1080 @ 240fps.

When I load the files into the latest version of Resolve, it shows audio but no video but I can't hear the audio. If I load the files into GoPro Studio, they do not import (no errors....they just don't import).

If I open the files directly from my computer, I hear the audio but no video is shown.

Computer Specs:
Windows 10
Intel i5 3.20GHz
24GB RAM
2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT640
500GB Samsung SSD for OS
(4) 1TB Hard Drives for Storage

Would upgrading my graphics card fix this? It's a really old card.

I've also read that it's a good idea to transcode to DNxHR (or something similar) instead of trying to edit H.264 or H.265. If so, are there any recommended transcoders for Windows (either free or for purchase)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm considering upgrading my graphics card to the EVGA 1060 6GB graphics card. Someone recommended to me the 1080 but at $700, that's well above what I'm able to spend. Would the 1060 allow me to view and edit the H.265 files?

I'm using that card in my editing rig; while it wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison (I'm using a hackintosh) I'd be happy to see if a clip displays properly if you give me a sample.

Best regards,

Thanks Allen. I can upload a clip when I get home tonight (if I can get my graphics card to even work). Last night I got a blue screen of death. It's a graphics card issue since I was able to go into Safe Mode to boot up. Just ordered the 1060. Regardless, it will be a huge upgrade from the card I'm using now.

From what I found, the 1060 does support H.265 (see below)

Feature Set H are capable of hardware-accelerated decoding of 8192x8192 (8k resolution) H.265/HEVC video streams

GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1080, GeForce GTX 1060, NVIDIA TITAN XP, GeForce GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti

Do you have Resolve Studio? or are you using the free version which doesn't support H.265 on Windows.

I am using the Free version of Resolve. Might be time to upgrade to Premiere Pro.

Sorry, somehow I missed seeing your replies. Thank you for the info. Looks like it may be time to switch to Adobe Premiere.

Update:

So I can import .265 4K/30 files into DR 14 (free)!

Problem was that I was trying to import them directly from the Hero 6 but after I copied to my desktop, I could import them fine. Haven't tried a 4K/60 yet.

bob

EDIT: Ok, looks like 4K/30 is not .265 but 4:3 4K/30 is.

A possible solution is to trim your footage using GoPro Studio and output the trimmed clips as Cineform. Import the Cineform clips into Resolve (Free version) and edit for better color correction and smoother playback. I do it for H.264 GoPro files and assume it will work for H.265. I only use about 10% of what I shoot.
GP Studio automatically converts files to Cineform.

Thanks Cedric - Have they replaced Studio with another editor? How do they expect Hero6 users to edit HEVC? I hear they have dropped their drones too and the business is up for sale.

Hi,
HERO 6_4K HEVC with DVR Studio version works great with Nvidia GPU.
I see you have a pretty good PC configuration: it must do it. By cons, only with the studio version.
An example with clip a HERO UHD 50 fps on a TL UHD. No issue.

Just a very small tip: Clip Attribute => Change Data Levels from Auto to Full (it's almost all the time the same with GROPROs and drones (?))

What video cards are required for the Studio version performance?
