Best way to convert 4k 10-bit for Resolve to read?

PostMon Dec 11, 2017 4:58 am

I recently shot 4k 10-bit 422 footage. I used Wondershare to convert it to ProRes HQ 422 so that Resolve could read it. Is there a better way to prep 4k 10-bit footage for Resolve?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Todd
What did you shoot on? (GH5?)

This isn't a one-answer-question. Different workflows have different requirements and needs.
That said, PRHQ is indeed a very good choice (are you on a Mac?) for most 4:2:2 10 bit camera files.

Hi, Hector!

Yes, I shot on a GH5. I chose 4.2.2 10-bit for the recording format. I then used Wondershare to convert it to .mov as ProRes HQ 4.2.2. - even though it was recorded in 10-bit 4.2.2. as MOV.

On one shot, the MOV file was 151 MB. After Wondershare converted it, it was 1.1 GB. I could then see it in Resolve, although due to the file size, the playback was quite slow.

Is there a better way to "prep" shots out of the GH5 for Resolve? Yes, I am on a Mac.

Thanks!!

I am not familiar with Wondershare or how it converts to Prores but it seems legit enough.

In the Studio version of Resolve (paid) you can work natively with the GH5 10 bit files.

Converting to Prores will always result in bigger files as it has lower compression. It shouldn't however result in slower playback. on the contrary, PR files should run smoother on your system than (the smaller) camera originals.

maybe if you work from an extremely slow drive.. though I doubt it.

There isn't a better workflow I can think of than PRHQ for what you are doing except for buying the Studio version and working native. or maybe finding a better (faster?) tool than Wondershare for transcoding

Hi,
With the Davinci Resolve Studio version: it's integrated.
And better: no need to buy Wondershare

Something very interesting I’ve noticed...

First of all, the free version of Resolve is exceedingly capable & unbelievable value!!!

However, as you peal back the onion, you realize there are lots of incremental benefits to using the paid Studio version, this thread is another example. Even though I’m strictly a hobbyist (having come from Sony Movie Studio), I’ve gone ahead & bought the Studio version. At $300 for professional software, it’s a bargain.

Yep. Picking up Resolve Studio is next on the list. Thanks everyone for your help and support - and fast replies. By the way, how many computers can I install Resolve Studio on? For myself, I only plan to use a desktop and my MacBook Pro.

You get two activations using the license version, which you can deactivate yourself when you replace a computer.
