Crop output footage

PostThu Dec 14, 2017 9:59 am

Good morning, I'm looking for a way to crop an output footage. I mean, I'm able to crop the aspect ratio of a movie by the blanking tool, but not the exported file. Just an example: I've a capture source at 1920x1080 shot with my Micro Cinema Camera, I wish to have a movie of 1920x817 so I blank the video with that output aspect ratio. When I export it I will have a movie of 1920x817 at the top of a black rectangle of 1920x1080.
Is there a way to have a movie with an aspect ratio of 1920x817 in a file of 1920x817 pixel size?

In project setting modify the timeline to the desired final aspect/resolution. And in image scaling select output full frame with crop.

Don't think that will work. You can get it to display correctly on system by changing the output scaling, but the deliver format will still be 1920x1080 and will come out incorrectly scaled/cropped when delivered.

Or did I miss something?

Resolve doesn't have "crop on export" option.- actually it does.
You have to set project to 1920x817 and required scaling option (+manually correct if needed).
Just be careful with 817 as this is no even number and can cause issues on some exports.

Have you actually tried this and confirmed it works? I'd rather be wrong, but as far as I can tell, there's no way to export custom sizes, except blanked within the standard 1920x1080 frame.

You can export about any resolution you want.
Actually- you can adjust it in export tab. Just use custom and type desired resolution. Depending on scaling settings you can get different results.

Yeah, I see now that a custom Deliver sizing option is available on some formats, e.g. DNxHR 444. So, if the timeline is set at the desired output resolution, output scaling is set to full frame with crop and delivery format matches timeline, it should work.

Sounds ok.
Export format needs to support custom resolution, otherwise you can't use custom frame sizes. This is key requirement.

I would warn you that 2.35 (1920x817) is not a good choice for any format. You would be better off going with 1920x800 (2.40) for home video. If it's a 2K theatrical release, then 2048x858 works fine. Those odd numbers are dodgy.
