Windows 10 "protected folders" breaks installation

PostSun Dec 17, 2017 9:07 am

Enabling the "protected folders"/"controlled folder access" feature that Windows 10 introduced in the previous bigger upgrade breaks installation of Resolve (at least v 14.2.0.12). Upon starting the installation, a warning comes up that access to the desktop was blocked, and when continuing the process, the installation eventually fails with the message "There was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete the installation."

Access details:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msiexec.exe has been blocked from modifying %desktopdirectory%\ by Controlled Folder Access.
Detection time: 2017-12-17T08:59:13.371Z
User: ELYSIUM\nicos
Path: %desktopdirectory%\
Process Name: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msiexec.exe
Signature Version: 1.259.387.0
Engine Version: 1.1.14405.2
Product Version: 4.12.17007.17123

It is not possible to exclude the desktop from the list of protected folders, so the only way to install Resolve is to disable the security feature.

Hi,

Attempt to change the properties of the shortcut on the desktop:
right click => property => Compatibility tab => CHECK ON 'Run this program as administrator'

Or you log in as an administrator.

This is not about running Resolve itself, it's the installer that fails.

That, and randomly advising people to run stuff as admin is something that should have died back with Windows XP.

You should run the installer 'as administrator', though.

I've seen reports of issues in the Adobe forums as well with the new Protected Folder's featuer of Windows 10.

It may be best to leave that feature turned off. It's fundamentally designed for folks who don't know what they're doing, and anyone using software at this level should know what they're doing.

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

It's "funny" how things that are designed for people who don't know what they are doing can royal screw things up, lol! :o
