No mov or mp4 files in Davinci Resolve 12.5

PostMon Dec 25, 2017 8:17 pm

I've read several BMD forum and offsite discussions of this problem, but I'll still lost. Since my mov and mp4 files show up in the Win 7 video folder, and amatuer programs like Pinnacle Studio import those files, blaming my OS doesn't make much sense to me. (My Davinci version imports mts files just fine.) If I use an external recorder like the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, will the resulting files be easily imported by my Davinci Resolve 12.5 - without changing my operating system? Thanks.

Asrock H110M-HDV, Intel i5 6600, DDR4 8gb, GForce GX 750Ti, Win 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1. (Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems KB3123479 installed.

For whatever reason DR doesn't offer the same file support under Win7 as other, and lesser, NLEs do (and DR hasn't officially supported Win7 for some time now). However, your post is useless, because you didn't specify the format (h.264? h.265?) . Or the resolution. Or the bit depth. Or whether you're using the Studio or free version.

For greater compatibility, download and install KB2670838. That may solve it or it may not. If not, transcode the footage to Prores or DnxHD/HR. Or record in one of those format, if you have that option. Note that your system is underpowered for Resolve, and you'd probably want to avoid H.264 anyway, for better performance.

Thanks for your reply. I want to use mov files from an older Lumix GH3, which are h.264, 1920x1080 24p. I assume 8 bit off the SD card. I'm using the free version of DR 12.5, because my budget is underpowered. Is there a transcoder available that will work with my system? The Avid Media Composer First requires an i7 processor (mine is an i5).

ffmpeg will work, and if you find the command-line interface a bit pathological (many do) there are some good free or inexpensive frontends to it out there. Try Avanti (http://www.avanti.arrozcru.org/) or MyFFMPEG (http://www.myffmpeg.com/). Avanti has some caveats for running on Windows 7 so make sure you're aware of those.

You might also want to check out Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr/).

Almost there! I tried your suggestions, and WinFF got me the farthest: my mov file converted to mpeg 4 1080p, and there is even the DR symbol on the file icon in the Win 7 Videos folder, but DR still doesn't see it!

The problem you're going to run into is still that DR relies on Windows' built-in support for those file types (MPEG4 implies H264 encoding). You'd probably be better off converting to DNxHD or another intermediate codec.

That's what I would prefer, but DNxHD is not one of the available options.

You likely converted the original H.264 to H.264 again.

You can do something like this:

ffmpeg -i "infile.mov" -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a copy "outfile.mov"

A lower profile number transcodes the video with a lower bitrate.

ffmpeg supports DNxHD just fine, if your frontend doesn't show it as an option, it might be an idea to try a different frontend. Or, if WinFF has customisable options for converting, you can use the DNxHD-related parameters as discussed here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/907398/ ... se-of-usin

Thanks. It's an AVI file that has the DR symbol in the converted file's icon in the Win 7 Video folder. I visited the site you suggested and tried adding this as a custom command: ffmpeg -h encoder=dnxhd, but still just a cold shoulder from DR.

You might want to read that page again a bit more closely. -h is the help option which tells ffmpeg to print the encoder options.

Here is also a discussion on how, specifically, to get WinFF to convert to DNxHD: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... Hph1S6oufg

Check the first post of this thread, to download cliptoolz convert v2:

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=37632&start=50

If you have trouble with DNxHD convert to Prores. Resolve can't read most .avi files, the exception being uncompressed.

Thanks. I read the discussion you suggested and then tried specifying this output: ffmpeg -i <video-clip> -vcodec dnxhd <video-clip-in-dnxhd> So WinFF created a wmv file, still unrecognized by DR. The link for Cliptoolz is 404. I realized that my DR 12.5 does recognize a few mov files that I created a while back, but they are in 720-400 rather than the original mts 1920x1080 footage. I don't remember how I created those files - possibly in Pinnacle Studio 14, and they import into DR. I appreciate all your help - this must be the most boring discussion you've ever had!

Success! ClipToolz Convert v. 2 downloaded even though I got a 404 error, and I used it to convert my mov file to ProRes 422 - which DR 12.5 graciously recognizes. Thanks!
