Any more recent experiences with this machine?

I hope at some point there will be an app to control fan speed and force it to higher RPM to get bit lower temps.
There may be some logic to slow down CPU after it operates to long at such a high temps.

Taking spec sheets seriously and running parts much closer to their rated thermal limits than most system builders do is standard Apple practice. Doing this got them into some trouble with the GPUs in the 2013 Mac Pro, but it seems to work fine with Intel CPUs.

It might run perfectly fine for the first year or two or even three, but running them that hot is definitely shortening it's life span. How much it shortens it will depend on how often the owner is pushing it hard.

Apple has been doing this for years. If it produced mass CPU die-offs after a few years, we'd know about it by now. A lot of non-Apple notebooks let CPU temps exceed what DIY builders quote as target max temps for desktops too. Presumably these vendors have discussed this approach with Intel engineers and were assured this is fine. I suspect the common wisdom about ideal max temps is just overly conservative for modern parts.

Yes and this is actually one of the things which I don't like about my Mackbook Pro. It will keep fan at 0 RPM and let CPU to get to 75C and make case warm. I rather have fan running at eg. 1500RPM (which you can't hear at all) and have CPU at 45C.

As pointed- when this happens time to time it's probably not really important, but when it's continues then it may be different story. I also assume Apple knows what they are doing, but whole saga with Mac PRO overheating doesn't really proves it.

I'm considering one as a future purchase. But it will be disappointing to find out that the only solution to my current problem with Resolve is to buy an expensive iMac.

Would the base model be sufficient for Resolve? It has 8 cores, 32GB RAM and AMD Radeon Pro Vega 56 (8GB HBM2). I'm tempted.

It's hard to say without knowing more about your requirements. HD? 4K? Beyond? What kind of media?

Hi, I'm looking to do 4K grading and editing from Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro RAW DNGs. Thank you.

On the 10-core model with Vega 64 I can work with Blackmagic RAW DNG's no problem in a 4K timeline. I would think the 8-core can handle it, but you should at least get the Vega 64. Don't count on realtime noise reduction though in a 4K timeline (I get about 19fps with one GPU) but the rest is pretty smooth, it's a very capable machine. You can also work in an HD timeline and do your final output in 4K. You might get realtime noise reduction that way.

I'm able to play and edit RAW 3:1 4.6K Ursa Mini footage in a UHD timeline, haven't had to make proxies or optimize media yet (though I probably will at some point, if only to reduce the amount of wear on my main media drives). Have done some basic color grading too. Haven't heard the iMac fans come on yet, though that could be because the RAID fans are louder.
