Davinci Resolve conflicts with Duet Display

PostFri Feb 16, 2018 8:06 am

I had a particularly nasty startup error with Davinci Resolve, present in the latest version 14.3.

The 'projects' startup windows opened fine, but once a project was selected and the main window opened, it went unresponding perpetually and the CPU core maxed out. The process could not fully be ended by any means.

Turns out that this is due to a conflict with Duet Display. Almost certainly Duet Display's fault, as it's essentially some form of dark magic hack to turn your iPad into a second display, by doing various messy stuff and pretending to be display hardware. Then it hangs as Resolve tries to interact with this fake-display and it doesn't behave like a normal one.

I verified this by reinstalling and uninstalling twice, consistently reproduced.

The last lines of the log file:

Thanks for the heads-up, I was about to try Duet with my MBP as a second display for Resolve.
After all, the colors of an iPad are quite good. Sigh.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Been testing Splashtop's XDisplay recently for when I'm working from home/on the road
It works. But still bit buggy with Resolve, and seem to take a lot of resources and drop performance.
Older version of Splashtop plays clean, but only mirrors so bit useless.

XDisplay is very well made, best tablet display app I used so far and works as expected with most video apps.

In Resolve, the best functionality I get with it is (until buginess is fixed) using it for floating scopes on a single display setup.

I'm using a $75 used Dell Ultrasharp for scopes on my system at the moment. There are good reasons to avoid overly-complex technology to provide either a grading display or for scopes. Just buy another AC-operated monitor and a cable. Keep things simple.

:)

Its not for budget reasons Marc.. pure portability (and some techophilia).
I'd never grade a show on this setup, however, to prepare a class, test a look, learn new tricks, do a quick beauty favor to a friend or even just play on Resolve at home I'd definitely like my tablet to collaborate with my laptop. You just can't move around with an AC Dell as easy ;)

Ever since I have an iPad (2011) I've been testing these and they keep getting better.
