Resolve 14.3.0.014 crashing on play

PostThu Feb 22, 2018 5:31 pm

Resolve newbie here considering a switch from Premiere but I'm having a problem with constant crashing.

Yesterday I was having a few intermittent problems with Resolve crashing when I scrubbed the timeline. Today it was consistently crashing every time I press play (or L, spacebar, etc.). I will outline my system information and the things I have already tried below.

Crash Report
  • https://drive.google.com/file/d/10SUfolsGN0NvavWJtvJW1xBj3maEXXaa/view?usp=sharing
Technical Specs
  • Resolve 14.3.0.014
  • Mac Pro 6,1 (Late 2013)
    3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    16GB 1866MHz DDR3
  • 2x AMD FirePro D500 GPU
    3GB VRAM
  • macOS High Sierra 10.13.3
Project Settings
  • 1920 x 1080 HD 24FPS 48k Stereo
  • (Ask if any other details are pertinent and I will supply them)
Things I’ve Tried
  • Changing GPU modes between OpenCL and Metal
  • Checked/unchecked 'Use Optimized Media'
  • Clearing the render cache
  • Generated new optimized media for all clips
  • System restart
  • Updated macOS (supplemental update)
Those last two steps bought me more time before crashing where I could play back some of the timeline, but the audio is choppy and it eventually crashes again. Now it doesn't crash immediately on play, but after a few seconds or if I try to move the playhead. It was running smoothly yesterday, most of the time, so I assume with some tweaks my system should be capable. Thanks in advance for any advice or insight!

The plot thickens.

I may have found the culprit but not sure what to do about it. I caught CrashReporter chugging CPU in Activity Monitor and so I opened my Console and most of it looks like this:

...Feb 22 12:33:11 Vin-Mac-Pro VstScanner[7744]: [7744] stack overflow
Feb 22 12:33:12 Vin-Mac-Pro VstScanner[7745]: [7745] stack overflow

Feb 22 12:33:14 Vin-Mac-Pro VstScanner[7750]: [7750] stack overflow
Feb 22 12:33:14 Vin-Mac-Pro VstScanner[7751]: [7751] stack overflow...

(repeats about 8500 times now)

I disabled all audio plugins and also removed the directory and rebooted, but this is still happening. I'm pretty sure this is Resolve trying to scan my plugins. I'm also noticing a lot of "_DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit" related stuff in my log, which as far as I can tell means things are fighting for memory.

I should mention that Resolve originally crashed scanning a few particular plugins so I deleted them from my system. I haven't seen an error alert or even scanning plugins window since.

Potentially but not necessarily related, Resolve never quits. It tries to quit, freezes in the background with a lot of memory usage and requires force quit. This may be a symptom and not a cause, not sure.

Thanks again if anyone has ideas on how to make this stop!

Some startup errors in console in case it means anything:

(at this point it's stack overflow over and over)

And then this:

Hope this extra detail helps. I'm still not sure what to do.

Please download and install Resolve 14.3 from the BMD web site support page, and see if it behaves any differently.

The plugin scan worked in the new version, however it lost my project completely. I'm fairly certain I set the media location in the same place (there were already cache files and everything) so I don't know where to find my project. I know Resolve uses more of a database approach but I have no idea where that is or how to import it back. I wish I had thought to export my project first but I thought it would be seamless :/.

Can you tell me how to get my project back into Resolve now?

Thanks

So, this is definitely a lot more stable, thanks for that. I don't think I can recover my project, however. Let me know if you know a way, I think the new install wrote over it. There is only one file in the Application Support folder. I appreciate your help.

App Store Resolve and BMD web site Resolve install in totally different locations.

So they don't see each others project data.

Just launch the App Store Resolve and Export the desired projects, and then Import those project .drp files into the non-App Store Resolve.
