Is a Macbook Pro powerfull enough to run DaVinci

PostTue Feb 27, 2018 8:55 pm

Hello Everyone,
Im currently colorgrading my videos in but would like to start grading in DaVinci. I've tried to run it on my current Imac but its not fast enough.
So im thinking about upgrading to a new macbook pro. But i would like to know if a:

2,3 ghz & 8GB ram can do the job or do i need to have a macbook with atleast 16gb ram?

Thanks

"Need" is a strange term here. Resolve will run on any modern computer, with varying frame rates at varying resolutions.
Some people who use Resolve require the ability to have real-time playback through multiple colour nodes from 4K RAW footage, others edit 1080p and don't need realtime.

The faster your computer the faster Resolve works, but there is no magical threshold where it stops working.

Adding to what Kye wrote

I'm using the latest Macbook Pro (2017) to teach and lecture with, and it runs Resolve wonderfully.

Hey Steve.

Its the 2.9 i7 quad (kaby lake)16 GB (2133 MHz) of RAM with the Radeon Pro 560 (4GB)
I teach quite advance sessions on it with large and complex projects.
I work with an external Glyph Atom Raid (bus powered thunderbolt 3)
Its the best combo I've used to teach post production & color work. ever.

I believe that if needed i'd be able to work from it too... though that might be pushing it (depending on the client/job)

From what I have been given to understand, a key point is to make sure your graphics card has at least 2 gb of RAM plus as much regular RAM as you can afford, naturally. But before you do anything read the system reqs. Unlike most software makers, the folks at Blackmagic are honest about on what you'll need, in my experience.

MacBook Pro 11
As all laptop systems are designed for portability and low power, for use with DaVinci Resolve we recommend selecting the fastest CPU, 16GB of system memory and the GPU with the most memory that is currently available.
For example the Retina 15” MacBook Pro can be configured with a Radeon Pro 560 GPU option with 4GB of memory.

I run Resolve 14 on my 2017 maxed out MacBook Pro, and it runs very well. Of course you'll get slowdowns with heavy effects, or noise reduction work, but you can turn those nodes off, or render.
