Newbie Audio Question

I am trying to edit some GoPro footage of a SCUBA trip. YouTube tutorials got me up and running- trimming clips, editing clip speed, adding transitions ETC. Now all I want to do is add a single song to play as the sole audio for the video. I drop the song into the timeline. The problem is the song/audio plays at the speed of each individual video clip, super slow and terrible sounding. What am I doing wrong? I rendered the video to see what would happen, and there was no audio in the final file. What am I doing wrong?
