Blank screens during play back

I just started using Davinci resolve 14. All has been going pretty good but I am having some issues when I add in a Video Transition or Overaly. When I try to play the clip after inerting either of those it just gives me a black screen with my audio still playing and then when it passes the time of the overlay or transition the vidoe plays as normal. When I click on the part of the vidoe with the overlay it does show the vidoe with the overlay in the timeline but when I play the vidoe it just gives the blank screen again. Is there something im doing wrong?
