system requirements

I am buying a new computer and want it to run Davinci resolve 14 smoothly. I have been using my sons, which is a gaming computer but it is still laggy/choppy on playback. I don't have huge sums to spend. I was thinking around $2,000. What cpu, graphics card, how much ram,etc. other forums have said not to get quad processors. Can anyone assist?

Not a Pro user but Im running Davinci Resolve with no problems....except could use a bigger gpu. But with the crazy GPU prices i will live with my GTX 780 for a while longer. The cpu has no issues at all. But resolve is gpu hungry so maybe a AMD Ryzen 5 will be enough on a cpu if you want to save a bit. But thats just my 2 cents. What kind of video do you do? 4k or HD?

It will depend on the format of your video. Is it Full HD, UHD or may be 4K?

In your pricerange can you choose between CPUs from Intel or AMD. Both have two product ranges.
Intel have Coffee lake and the X299. AMD have Ryzen and the X399 Threadripper.

AMD has official annonuced a new faster generation af Ryzen to mid April and to the X399 line in 2nd half of 2018.

For graphics card can you choose between nVidea and AMD. Most prefer nVidea. And again it will depend on Full HD, UHD or 4K.
What graphics card do you son have?
And what camera do you use?
Currently there is a lot of rumor of the next faster generation of nVidea graphics card. Some say spring other says summer 2018.
You can try to google GTX 2080.

But I will suggest you to a start read the DaVinci Resolve 14 Configuration Guide:

Here they describe a Asus X99 motherboard, which is a previus generation of the current X299.
And list some graphics cards. Both nVidea and AMD.

thanks for that. Much appreciated. I just have to get my local computer techy to price it all up. The camera I used for all the footage was 4K.
hopefully that won't make too much difference requirement-wise.

Also for performance to $$ ratio AMD is the way to go.

I really like my computer and would not change anything except I would add a higher end gpu, something like a 1070 or higher with at least 8GB ram.

4K video has 4 times more pixel than Full HD and that makes a huge difference to the required amount of video ram in the graphics card. For 4K is 8 MB or even 11 MB vRam recommended. And I am sorry to tell you that due to high demand from cryptominers is there a shortage of Graphics cards and the current prices are several hundred dollars higher than normal. nVidea expect this situation to last until the end of 2018.

On 19 april vil the next generation of AMD ryzen cpus arrive together with 21 new motherboard with the X470 chip. According to AMDs own information will the Intel 8700K be around 7% faster than the Ryzen 7 2700X in gaming. But Resolve is not a game and I don't expect that 7% will really matter.
