Radeon Pro 580 / 8GB & BMMCC RAW Footage

PostMon Mar 19, 2018 4:13 am

I recently got a BMMCC to do mostly wedding videography, shooting at 24-60fps RAW and some compressed 4K/30p (drone footage). My current system, is an iMac 3.4GHz quad-core i5 processor with 8GB ram, Radeon Pro 570 with 4GB. I've been doing most of my work on Premiere 2018, but I'd like to move to Resolve. Currently, using Premiere, playback it's a bit choppy. So I'm planning to upgrade my iMac to:

- 4.2GHz quad-core 7th-generation i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
- 16 or 32GB ram
- 2TB Fusion Drive
- Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB video memory

Using resolve, does anyone know if these specs would handle the above with no lagging or frame dropping? (some slow-mo and noise reduction as well) Thanks

It would definitely handle ProRes 422 HQ fine from your camera, I've got pretty much the same machine.
I can't tell for RAW, since I seldom use my camera in RAW.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thanks for the info. I'm also wondering if a Razer Blade i7-7700HQ, with a GTX 1060 (6GB) and, 16GB RAM would do a better job than the iMac i7 4.2GHz + Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB... Thoughts? Thanks.

Premiere playback with RAW will always be choppy. This is just how ACR works.
First of all try to use Resolve with same hardware.
Upgrade media storage to fast SSD drive. This may be the real bottleneck. Not sure if Fusion Drive is best solution for editing but it is just guess, i never test it...
Currently at home i use hackintosh build in 2011 based on i7-2600K (4.2Ghz overclocked) and Radeon HD 7970 (3GB RAM) I can edit BMMCC RAW footage in realtime without any problems.
But higher specs always allow you faster render times and may allow better realtime for noise reduction (if you need noise reduction it in real time).

P.S. if you use BMMCC take a look at my custom made accessories for BMMCC here https://lavky.com/radioproektor/

I use the SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSD 1.92TB via USB3.1 with my 2017 iMac and it flies with RAW.
