Lite used to be the official name for the free version of Resolve. It is now used unofficially to refer to that version.

If you buy a license, you get Resolve Studio.

As far as I know, BMD have never released a list that compares Lite and Studio in different platforms. Many of us would like to have it, as it would be useful.

Yes, or Prores. Linux Lite supports both.

That list compares the Studio versions of R12.5, yes. Some of the codecs, in different platforms, also work in Lite.

And yes, no H264/libx264 import on Linux Lite. Only on Linux Studio.

Up to today the policy of bm was that once you buy one, you never had to pay for upgrade: i got my dongle back with v10, no other money spend up to today.

Policy can change, it's up to bm.

You should stay away from consumer delivery type formats meant for streaming of material on TV's etc.

mp4, h.264, h.265, .mkv etc. are simply not suited for the type of data computation that Resolve needs to perform internally.

It is unlikely that you will be satisfied with Resolve's performance if you use these formats, even if you buy the Studio version.

Something like Adobe Premiere might fare better with those formats, but even there you're looking for trouble.

So basically the bottom line is that you will need to transcode to something more robust like DNxHD or ProRes.

Do that, save your money for now and learn the Resolve free version. Then, based on your experience buy the Studio version...but don't do it just because you want to use consumer format -- you won't be happy.

Matroska (MKV) is not a video format. It's a container. The others are consumer/delivery video formats. Unlike MP4 or MOV, Matroska can be used to store video in any lossless (editing) format like FFV1 or the slightly lossy ProRes video formats. The only problem with Matroska is that it (for historical/political reasons) isn't supported by most professional editing software. It is actually a recommended storage format (with FFV1 video and LPCM/FLAC audio) at digitized analogue video at cultural heritage institutions.

So basically the bottom line is that you will need to transcode to something more robust like DNxHD or ProRes.

Above all you need to make sure that your video uses a constant frame rate. Most mobile devices record in Variable BitRate (VBR), which causes problems with audio/video synchronization when you edit these formats.

Kays, I don't think you can say that Resolve is unsuited for H264, MP4, etc. All my footage is H264 1080 50p 35Mbps and Resolve has no problems editing or grading it, or up-scaling to UHD.
