GPU choice for Resolve

PostWed Apr 11, 2018 3:34 am

Currently I'm running an HPz820 dual CPU with a Titan x maxwell GPU. Performance is ok unless I use an OFX plugin (like glow) or Noise reduction. Then things get really slow and I need to cache for playback.

I've just come into possession of a Quadro P6000 GPU card.

So my question: Will I see a significant performance increase with the p6000? Or, is it optimized for other tasks than are used in Resolve?

Thanks!

Best way is to try it and see how well it performs.

Yes. I'd prefer not to open the box yet, as I might decide to sell it. :)

I'd sell the Quadro and get a 1080ti or something better, they are about the same speed for OpenCL/Cuda based things.

The P6000 seems to be similar to the Titan XP, but with double the GPU memory. If I test the card, is there some way to see if I'm using all that memory? I'm thinking that the extra memory might be an advantage in certain calculations like with NR that uses multiple frames and only one GPU at a time.

Yes.

Resolve favors GTX over Quadro. You can still use it, but a comparable GTX does give you better value with the software.

I tried playing some material with noise reduction or glow effect while watching the Task Manager in Windows. Neither the CPU, memory, or GPU were working anywhere near capacity, so maybe the bottle neck is the source drive which is a RAID 0 (software RAID) of 4 drives. The davinci speed test of the drive reads about 300 max read speed. Perhaps that's causes the slowness? Or maybe it's the clock speed of my CPU which is about 2.8 I think...

Maybe adding a hardware RAID controller would help?

Hi.

I don't know how much Ram you have. But may be playing from a Ram Disk can tell you if your Software RAID is the bottle neck?

Interesting idea. I have 128gb of RAM. My system SSD is also a bit faster as well. Now I just need to learn how to make a RAM disk :)
