How to fix flickering video

I just finished shooting clips for a sport center commercial video. I went back home and moved all my clips from SD cards to my computer. Unfortunately, while checking the clips, I have discovered a lot of flicker caused probably by high shooter speed (for slow motion scenes) and artificial lighting going out of synch. I'm quite sure Davinci Resolve can get that flickering solved, but not sure on how to do it. Is anyone able to point me in to right direction? I'm not running a studio version so time lapse deflicker is not really an option.

without studio or a deflicker plugin I don't think you will have a lot of success.

I've used the DR studio timelapse deflicker with mixed results, and mostly use https://digitalanarchy.com/Flicker/main.html

"If" you are testing resolve 15, there is a big improvement in the flicker tools there.

I knew there will be a day when my free version of DR will be replaced by Studio one :) Just wanted to wait a bit more and get it together with BMPCC 4K.

I just tested it on a project where I had previously used FlickerFree by Digital Anarchy and WOW ! I'm blown away by Resolve 15's OFX deflicker, congrats team Blackmagic! And a big thank you because we often need to deal with flicker.

Results are as good as FlickerFree (so far) and on a few slow-mo shots with a lot of motion I was actually able to get rid of the flicker whereas FlickerFree just couldn't do it! So WOW. And it's crazy fast as it uses 100% of both our Titan Xp GPU's. FlickerFree doesn't make use of CUDA (on Mac, at least) so it's painfulllllly slow. Resolve's version works great on bad h264 drone compression flicker too (same as FlickerFree but way faster).

Thanks for the test François!

Tried it on an HD 23.98 file with really bad strobing from a light source not matched to shutter. With two 1080 Tis it worked in real time, about 95% on one and 65% on the other, with (to me) a great result.

Super cool, thx François for this answer... It looks like I won't be forced to schedule an extra pass in FCP7 just for that (when I'll have to cope with that yearly same specific issue in the same specific place in June :) ).
Good to know...

If this works this well in Davinci 15 then it will help out a lot. Just testing Digital A Flicker Free and it just spent 8 minutes rendering a 4k section that is about 7 seconds long. Results seems to be great but it takes a very long time since it only uses 7% CPU and 0% GPU.

Tested flicker free in Davinci 14 and it had lots of problems so looking forward to testinb Dav 15.

Yes I did. I works out of the box. Literally, I just dragged deflicker from effects palette to my clip and that was all I have done. All flickering was gone.

Resolve 15's Deflicker is awesome.
We use it a lot in our current feature film grading.

If you do notice weird movements/ghosting after applying, try to play around with Advance control to achieve better results.

Do you think it will work for timelapses as well with flicker? Similar to Boris and flicker free.
Would be fantastic if it could handle changing apertures.

There is a setting for timelapse, a setting for fluorescent lights, and then the DIY advanced controls.

For treating 'common-or-garden' flicker/strobing due to shutter-speed mismatch under fluorescent lights, I find this 'frame offset/blend/sharpen' technique can work surprisingly well, for relatively static scenes at least:

Easy to apply in Resolve.

That's the point. This will only work with static footage. I tried that out before went for studio version of DR

I'm currently using the free version of 15 but am considering buying Studio. Right now I'm trying out 15's Deflicker function, which appears to show you how it would work in Studio, but with a watermark on top. So, if it is the case that what it is showing is exactly what you would get in Studio (apart from the watermark), then this is a good way of testing this feature.

My problem is this. I am using Deflicker to get rid of rolling on a screen projection in the background of a shot. In the foreground is a person giving a lecture. When I use Deflicker the rolling disappears from the background screen projection (hooray!) but the lecturer in the foreground appears to be moving in slow motion.

Question: is this only happening because I'm testing this out in the free version? Or would this also happen in Studio?

Many thanks.

Hello,

Not issue here but giving us the specifications of your PC? MAC? LINUX? as well as the size of your TL, the format of your source clips? Compressed format or not ? the definition of the Delivery page (in short all that will help us to help you ...):
(Deflicker OFX is very greedy in resources ....) Activation of the cache?

Merci :)

Thank you, Jean Claude.

I am using a Microsoft Power Book with the following specifications:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i&-6600U CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.81 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00GB
64-bit OS, x64-based processor
Source clips: MP4

I had not engaged with the Delivery page as I'm on the free version of 15 and would not want to render my footage with the watermark.

From the specs of my PC, does it look like I don't have sufficient processing power to use Deflicker?

Many thanks again.

I also think that your material is not powerful enough. Sorry.
