AMD VS NVIDIA?

PostMon Apr 23, 2018 1:49 pm

Hello! I have the workstation with AMD Radeon Sapphire R9 380, 4GB; and the laptop Dell Alienware with NVIDIA 1070.

I found that even if all another hardware (more RAM, more powerful processor, faster drive system etc) is better at the workstation, video editing is faster in DaVinci on my laptop. Especially editing drone videos in h256 which works flawlessly without any transcoding or optimized media creation, when at the workstation it can't be played at all.

Is this problem coming from a worst AMD / OpenCL performance in general or just this particular R9 380 card is so bad?

You're setting a less-than-stellar AMD card against a very good Nvidia card. The results merely reflect that.

Hi.

I wonder if your drone videos are in 4K/UHD?

The GTX 1070 has 8 MB vram your R9 380 only 4 MB.

Thank you.
Got it. My bad.

One more question, please.
I found that video cards NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X 12GB (Maxwell) are surprisingly "cheap" ($100-$200 less than 1080TI). What's wrong there? Is TITAN X can be considered for DaVinci or 1080TI still be a better option?

Hi.

The GTX TITAN X 12GB (Maxwell) is previous generation compared to GTX 1080 Ti. The current generation is GTX TITAN X (Pascal).

There have been a worldwide shortage of Graphics Cards and the prices have been very high. But I saw on the internet that the average prices of the top Graphics Cards on Amazon last month was 25% lower that the previous month.

But we are all waiting for the next generation of nVidea Graphics cards. They will be ether faster or cheaper. I expect then to arrive to summer.

Regards Carsten.

yes, I'm aware of the coming NVIDIA upgrade. I agree that it's the probably best strategy is waiting. Another hand, I have huge plans regarding video for next months... I can handle it with my current hardware, but the faster process may save me hours and hours. It's hard to keep patience :)

You could use the AMD card with optimized media and the Nvidia without it.
