"Selection follows playhead" significantly slows down play

PostTue May 01, 2018 4:22 am

On timelines with hundreds of small cuts I noticed a significant slowdown of playing speed on the Edit page if the "Selection follows playhead" is enabled. Updating the selection should not be computing intensive so perhaps there is a peformance bug in that code.

+1 I am also seeing this.

Turning on selection follows playhead makes my sequences unplayable for even the simplest of sequences. If I just drop a single DNxHD clip in a timeline I go from perfect 23.98 playback to between 6-9 FPS.

I'm having the same Issue.
I work with GH5 and GH5s 4k10bit and Cineform Proxies.

I guess its a current bug, right?

This exists for me since version 14. It is either low on the priority list or not easily reproducible for BMD, I guess.

+1 frustrating as really useful when working properly. Hopefully BMD can look at this before full release of 15.

Yes, I noticed this issue also in version 14. In version 15 it still exists. I try this option on 3 totally different PCs (in matter of computing power and speed) and experienced the same issue on every single one. No matter how fast or slow the PC is, this issue exist. This bug makes trim start and trim end keyboard shortcuts totally useless.

Also when we are talking about bugs, I noticed that jumping between stacked timelines is a little bit buggy. There is a small lag while loads all clip tumbnails. I didn't noticed that Premiere PRO loads again and again all clip tumbnails when different timeline is selected. Maybe there is an option to disable loading of tumbnails every time when changing selection of a timeline, but I couldn't find it.

+1 making many keyboard shortcuts useless unless you select the clip manually first, or try to Shift+V before every use of one of those keyboard shortcuts and hope your tracks are selected right

I'm noticing this too, frame rate is roughly halved (although the playback fps for some reason says I'm getting real time playback).

Only occurs when I have the Inspector showing, though I've found that having the Inspector set to half height rather than full height improves things significantly; YMMV.

Interesting. The inspector doesn't seem to affect it for me. However the problem is much more significant when using two monitors. Turn dual monitor mode off and "Selection follows playhead" still slows down playback but not as much

Actually Tom can you try enabling "Minimize interface updates during playback" in user playback settings, then restarting Resolve. Just did this and it seems to have helped, but not solved, the issue.

Didn't help. Tried different GPU processing options too. Just have to wait for a fix.

Yep, sadly. Reported this during the beta too and it wasn't fixed.

Update: I switched the GPU mode from Metal to OpenCL and enabled "Minimize interface updates during playback" in user playback settings, restarted Resolve, and that was a significant jump in performance with selection follow playhead. Still slower than playback without Selection Follows Playhead enabled, but much better. This could be specific to my hardware but thought I'd let you all know in case it helps you too.

This seems to be fixed now for me, as indicated in the release notes of 15.1.1. Thanks BMD!
I guess it was a lower priority item after all. :-)

Sadly for me this is no longer fixed - that "fix" i posted lasted for about 5 minutes and the 15.1.1 update has made no difference whatsoever.

This bug is still present in 15.2.0.033 :(

I cannot use the Selection Follows Playhead feature, which I like to use, but each time I enabled it, I cannot play the timeline in the Edit page, while the clips play perfectly smooth in color page, with grading and all, but in the edit timeline playback is where it starts to drop frames. The fps is green and says 25fps as the timline, but it is clearly not real, because it is more like from 5 to 10fps.

When I disable Selection follows playhead the playback in Edit page is back to smooth 25fps as in the color page.

Please fix! Thank you Blackmagic !

Updated to 15.2.1.005 and it seems it works well now.. I cannot reproduce the problem any more. It plays smooth always. But I am not sure if the update to 15.2.1 was the fix, since I cannot find anything related to it in the change log. In any case, it works well now :)

"Selection Follows Playhead" still causes playback issues in 16.2.6.

When enabled, the playback will stutter for a frame or two when the playhead passes over edit points in the Edit Page timeline. The clip otherwise plays back fine after the playhead crosses the edit points, however.

Turning it off fixes the issue.
