Davinci resolve 14 vs decklink minimonitor

PostSat May 05, 2018 8:55 am

Hi, I'm going to take a decklink minimonitor card to edit in fullHD on my computer with davinci resolve 14 studio and Sierra operating system and maybe in the future also high sierra, I wondered if the decklink works with any monitor equipped with HDMI input or only with some monitors.

In some forums I read that the decklink does not work on any monitor but only on some, they say the truth or are they wrong?
I have 2 monitor fullhd benq and 1 AOC always fullhd.
thank you

It should work with most HDMI equipped displays. Not all HDMI displays will support all the frame rates and resolutions that the card can generate.

Dwaine, there were some reports that the original HD mini-monitor doesn't work with UHD monitors. Is there formal confirmation that it does? Thanks.

Huh? I suppose that depends on the ability of the UHD monitor to accept HD signals from the Mini-Monitor. I would be surprised if a UHD display couldn't accept an HD signal. But again, it depends on the display, and what resolutions and frame rates it supports.

It should be really rare that an UHD monitor is not accepting HD signals. There are still so many set-top boxes, media or Blu-ray players around that hardly any manufacturer would risk to try and sell such a thing.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

The mini-monitor is fussier than typical consumer equipment.

Well, it works for me with a LG UHD monitor.

Glad to hear it, but I've had cables that work with everything but the mini-monitor, receivers which pass every HDMI signal except the mini-monitor, etc. Bit of a mystery.

Well, HDMI is a serious PITA, we had installations in a university cinema where the (experienced) company that got the contract worked really hard to get everything going, exchanging components and such.

In the end, you can only take a laptop and the Mini Monitor and go testing in a shop.

:o

thanks for your information, but then if I order a minilink deck I'm not sure it works with my monitors?
I have to risk and maybe come back to the seller the card, right?

Yes. Other work around (if you know that your monitor should support given frame rate) is to use cheap HDMI splitter as BM cards HDMI output can be "problematic".
You have to first make sure your monitor supports multiple refresh rates- specially those <50Hz, so 24,25,29.97,30 etc. Most cheap monitors don't, neither they properly support interlaced signals.
