Best Way to improove ?

PostMon May 14, 2018 8:44 pm

Hi

My system specs:

MAIN BOARD: Supermicro X9DRG-QF
CPU1: Intel Xeon E5 2620 @ 2.00GHz
CPU2: Intel Xeon E5 2620 @ 2.00GHz
RAM: 32,0GB DDR3 @ 666MHz
GPU1: 1535MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580
GPU2: 1535MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580
GPU3: NVIDIA Quadro 4000
I/O: DECKLINK HD EXTREME 3D+
Davinci Resolve Studio 14.3

STROAGE1: ATA Samsung SSD 850 SCSI Disk Device 256GB only for the OS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1
STROAGE2: ATA Samsung SSD 850 SCSI Disk Device 256GB only for temporary/work/downloads files
STROAGE3: ACCUSYS A08S-PS SCSI Disk Device RAID5 13040 GB - Only for materials to Grade-

I Know it is a old setup... 2K prores or proresQX (or equqal) playback stutters in color mode, Obviously if here are more nodes stutters more frequent. And there are a lot of lags during work, and in rush times it is so fustrating... Time has come I have to upgrade....

- Whether 2x GTX 1080 Ti will fix the playout lagging?
- Originally it was a "certificated" linux based worksation, maybe i should put linux back and and use it further?
- Or do I have to think to buy a completely new PC?

Any suggestion is wellcome!
Thanks
Andrew Martin P.

I don't think you need anything more than single GTX 1080.
This should get you smooth for 2K.

Hi, thank you for the quick reply!

I'm looking for a solution for the next 3-4 years, so thats why i think about 2x GTX 1080 TI. (it woud be great to handle 4K materials (or more) in the future without lag)

So it all depends on the GPUs?

Thanks

Get better GPU for now.
For next 3-4 years (4K) you rather need new machine.

2x 1080ti will give you 4k for the next 5 years.

Providing that you have the storage and bandwidths to play it.

Not with this old machine. Andrew would have to use DPX, but his storage is not fast enough for this.
ProRes or DNxHR should also work, but 12 cores at 2GHz will at some point show its limited power as for todays standards.
Although eg. Piotr is running 8 cores i7 at 3.8GHz (so about 1.5x more powerful than this machine) and he said dual Titans made substantial difference.
In Andrew case his CPUs won't give optimal power to balance 2x1080 , but for some assets it should be fine for 4K. I think I would still made this working for 2K at fairly cheap cost and then plan for an upgrade.

Agree, but the two 1080 will just be used in the new machine once he upgrade: they will be plenty for 4k work then down the line

Hi to all!
Thank you for your suggestion.

I borrowed GIGABYTE Geforce GTX 1080 8MB GDR5 (no TI), i will run some test, whether it's worth it or not.

Thanks.
