Reproducible crash on both DR 14 and 15

Every time the Windows Explorer is invoked (e.g. to export a grabbed still), DR is crashing. The Explorer window loads up for 1-2 seconds and then it freezes, and then DR is immediately crashing. This happens on both versions 14, and the latest 15.

The captured logs are from DR15: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Kz2QC ... wt6HvJRqhG

Windows 10 64bit (updated to the latest), 32 GB RAM, latest stable ATI FireGL W2100 drivers installed.

I wonder how many Windows users with issues, have machines that have been negatively impacted -- read: abused by recent Windows update(s).

I'm still trying to resolve the fact a brand new G-Technology USB-C 4TB external drive was destroyed by Microsoft Windows 8.1 code, as it attempted a forced OS Update during a DaVinci Resolve 14.3 Delivery page A/V files rendering job.

I could wish Blackmagicdesign would create code which prevents such a disastrous Forced OS Update while file writing and media rendering in Resolve.

I don't think this is the case here though. No other app in the system has the problem I'm experiencing with DR.

Unfortunately, there is nothing helpful in the Resolve logs.

Was this happening before you updated Windows?

Providing a Windows System Information .NFO file might be helpful.

The crash would happen at all versions of Windows that I had and all versions of Resolve. Here is the .nfo file: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jEqwp ... aaowveDK1Q
I hope it yields something useful, thanks!

The last Resolve crashes in your NFO file were from 15b3. Have you tried 15b4?

What Radeon driver package do you have installed?

I'm waiting for beta5 before I update DR, and retest. Regarding which driver package I use: Radeon Pro Software Enterprise Edition (stable version).

I installed the latest DR 15b5, and the crash continues to happen.

From what I can see the card is underpowered. We have tested the W7100 and W9100 and they are ok. The W2100 is significantly less powerful and give Resolve is more GPU dependent than most apps I think this is the first place to look.

Can you try a more modern GPU? The W2100 is 2014 vintage and low power even then.
Something like the RX580.

When I bought this PC 2 years ago, I also bought the nVidia GTX 960 4 GB, but I never installed it because I didn't want to lose the warranty. I guess I can try install the nvidia card this weekend, although the point DR fails is when it's invoking a Windows Explorer window to export an already grabbed still image, not at any moment of rendering or doing difficult computations. Personally, I doubt it's the graphics card to blame, but I will install the nvidia one.

I installed the Nvidia card, with the latest correct driver, and the problem remains. No matter which version of Resolve, no matter if it's 4k or 1080p, no matter which user account I use. Resolve just 100% reproducibly crashes when Windows Explorer is invoked from within DR. No other app crashes if Explorer is invoked, and neither Explorer crashes on its own.

What can we do about this further?

I have this problem in DR15 and windows 10 also. I have submitted at least 15 crash reports using the automated system. Generally happens to me when RMB clicking to create a new subfolder. Doesn't happen 100% of time, but happens very frequently.

The problem finally resolved(!) itself after about a year! Updating nvidia drivers, or windows to 1903 did not fix it. What fixed it was updating... VLC. VLC has bindings to Windows Explorer, and it's possible that it was one of these bindings causing a race condition to Explorer when it was getting invoked from within another app. The crashing bug was happening ONLY with Resolve and HitFilm Express and not any other app in my system. Sony Vegas did not crash, so that's not a "video editor"-related bug but rather a coincidence between Resolve and Hitfilm. Regardless, since none of the other apps in my system ever crashed when invoking Explorer there might still be a reason to look at it to avoid a crash since there have been a couple more such reports.
