Davinci Resolve 14.3 keeps crashing

PostWed May 23, 2018 5:22 pm

Hi!

I tried installing the 15 beta 3 version first, i complained about my graphics cards not being supported at first. Finally I got it to "work" when i chose one card (since i got two in this computer, Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT and a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX) and I had to choose OpenCL instead of CUDA.

After I figured out that, i eventually got to the "Existing projects" window, but double clicking the "Untitled project" that was there it crashes. No errors just closes down.

I thought it was a Beta issue, so I went online, started downloading the 14.3 version. While that was downloading, i uninstalled the 15 beta 3 version.

Then I proceeded with installing the 14.3 version.
No start up errors regarding graphic cards this time, so got straight to the "Existing projects" window.

Same here tho, trying to open the "Untitled project" that's already there, or hitting "New Project" and clicking "Create", is crashes. Exactly the same way as in the 15 beta 3 version.

Any clues?

I think the GPUs are too underpowered for Resolve.
How old is the system?

The hardware is pretty brand new except the GPU's.

I bought an upgrade kit a few weeks back.
CPU: Intel Core i7-7820X
MOBO: MSI X299 Tomahawk, Socket-2066
MEM: 4 x Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 8GB

So I guess it's the GPUs then:
1 x Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
1 x Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX

Installed v12 yesterday just to test, that worked fine, at least I was able to open up Davinci Resolve.

So you recon I just have to buy a new GPU and it'll be good to go?
Any recommendations on what I should buy? Will be doing 4k editing (30fps, but probably more in the future when I get new cameras)

Resolve 14 and up requires NVIDIA GPU's that have CUDA compute capability 3.0 or higher.

Your GPU's have compute capability 1.0 and 1.1.

If you want to do 4K work, you should consider a GPU with at least 8GB of VRAM.

I've been using Resolve 14 for about 6 months with no problems. Recently there was a Windows Home update to Version 1803. Since then, I've had problems with Resolve constantly crashing.

I can open a project and start editing, but after about 5 minutes Resolve will no longer play the timeline or source clips, and or/behaves arbitrarily. I can continue to navigate around the program and the Save function works, but nothing will play. Sometimes if I Quit out of it, the program won't launch at all until I restart the computer.

One thing that I've never seen before is that when I go back to the Media window from Edit, some, but not all, clips that I have just been accessing are offline.

Also, when I've only been editing for a minute or two when I first open the project, the first section of a thumbnail displayed in the timeline will be red and say Media offline, but as soon as I click on that section, the thumbnail will update again. (This is before program stops playing anything).

I tried the fix recommended in another thread of raising the Windows System Virtual Memory to 3000-6000. That stopped the program from completely crashing, which it was doing prior.

NVIDIA website says the GPU I have has compute capacity of 5.0.

Please help! I have a work deadline. Thanks!

@Annie, if you are in a tight time situation, and it seems like the 1803 update has created issues, the simplest fix would seem to be to revert to the last Windows version you were running.

There are no obvious crash dumps in your logs.

However, in all the crash logs, there are complaints of these files before the log ends:

_SKG6410.MOV

_SKG6413.MOV

_SKG6414.MOV

_SKG6416.MOV

Perhaps there is something about these files that is behaving differently in Windows 10 1803.

I have a Kepler 3.0 computing ability Graphics Card in my system but cannot use CUDA, because NVidia has no driver available for High Sierra. I'm on openCL.

Still, DaVinci 14.3 cannot play back xml imports (v 1.7) from Final Cut Pro X 10.4.2

I have tried everything, cache, proxies - DVR 14.3 cannot play back the footage. It stops every second or so, and then continues for second, or so.

I had no such problems on 12.6 (maybe I should downgrade?)

What specific graphics card do you have?

What type of media are those xml files importing? What's the media resolution and frame rate?

What's the project timeline resolution and frame rate?

Hi Dwaine

thanks so much for replying and your help its invaluable on these forums from all the reading i've done

graphics card is
Nvidia gtx 980ti

xml files importing:
Camera used sony fs7m2 slog 3 footage and phantom4 drone footage

media resolution and frame rate:
res (4k)3840 × 2160 frame rate 23.976

project timeline resolution and frame rate:
3840 × 2160 frame rate 23.976

have tried changing from cuda to opencl and gets a little further on export but crashes also at around 5 %

@Declan: Your link is not coming through intact. I think you may have too few posts to be able to include a real link. Try putting some spaces in random places, and lets see what comes through.

Or, try PM'ing me the link.

@Dwaine thanks for the ideas. Going backwards in Windows has always been difficult and time-consuming, and worrisome on security updates, so not going there. Your suggestion that it might be the files themselves gave me a quick-fix workaround.

I used GoPro Studio converter to convert the .MOV files to .avi files, and started a new timeline. Was able to edit all morning and output to mp4 no problem. No crashing, no Media Offline.

I want to note that I'm using the same camera on the same settings (H.264, 23.976) as I always have, but something in Windows upgrade must have changed the way the files are read. Converting to .avi is not a good long term solution, but I don't have time to figure it all out right now.

Thanks for your help!
