Feature Request - Master reveal all files & subdirectories

PostMon Jun 18, 2018 4:43 pm

Dear Support,

What I do is put all footage in directories in the master director. So it would also be convenient to be able to go click on the master text in the library and see all footage in the library and be able to filter on media type. So images, video, etc.

Because ironically after you organize them in folders, you loose the ability to see all media.

Greetings,
Robert.

You can Shift-click or control click multiple folders to see their contents

That is pretty interesting. Just tried it, didn't know that was possible. Natural instinct is to click on Master to see all footage in the bin. I have had this knee jerk reaction since resolve came-out so after so many years of wanting the feature, figured I would ask. It still would be a nice feature to have. It is a natual way of seeing the bin. Master has no other purpose other that to be able to do this.

Little feature, big result.

Do you know what is also not possible? You cannot do a search that goes into sub-folders. It would be a benefit to everyone if you could select the master, then do a search and it searches all subfolders/bins. Or you choose any bin and it searches from the selected to all subfolders/bins with-in.

As it now stands, you have to go to each and ever folder to see if something shows up. Yes, you could create a smart bin, but that is impractical. So the same way smart bins search all folders, it would be a hell of a help with workflow to be able to do the same with the search field.

UPDATE
I just tried using shift with the search field and it got me the desired result, but it wasn't what I would have come to naturally without your suggestion. I think others would also have the same thought, being that many OSes search this way.

Kind regards,
Robert

+1

Yes please.

Was just looking for this feature. I'm editing a feature, so selecting the directories is totally impractical because there are about 60 of them. So as it currently stands I have to select all of the directories every time just to perform a Top Level search.

Not the way this should be.

Instead of clicking 60 directories (do you mean bins?), why not shift-click the first one and then shift-click the last one?

Yeah, that is what I currently have to do.

But can you imagine how clunky and cumbersome that is, to Shift select and scroll through all of my bins every time I want to do a Top Level search?

It's really sloppy.

I just make a Smart Bin that reveals all media. Works great!

Sure.

But the point is we shouldn't have to do that. The Master Bin is already right there.

I do understand your point & agree with you.

Resolve is a bit more like FCPX in that it is more metadata based for media filtering. Having a lot of FCPX experience means I just add metadata to identify my clips rather than making lots of bins (Premiere, Avid style) and then create smart bins for grouping clips in the media pool. This allows all clips to reside in the Master bin for easy navigation & searching.

Yes I agree that searching the Master bin should be including subdirectories.
