Correct, but given limited bit depths and sensor characteristics, using the high exposure to explode the blacks does recover up to 2 more stops of range that would otherwise be lost by digitization. Vision 3 negative film has up to 21 stops of range, there is nothing digital currently in the world that can come close to that, so multiple exposures are required. At the end of the recombination, you effectively end up with more bit depth (i.e. 12 bits becomes 14 bits).
