Is this normal?

PostWed Aug 08, 2018 1:15 pm

I have added a few layers of text, all just basic straight text, along with letter box black solid bars on top and bottom. The text is causing playback to be lagged, but I am using a ridiculous system and this text is so basic..

I am using an iMac Pro, 18 core, Vega 64 16 GB GPU, 128 GB ram.

The footage is 4:1 RAW 4K, it is also directly on the built in SSD that has like 2900mb/s read speed and over 2300mb/s write speed.

Wow, James, we really want to know how that maxed out iMac Pro is working out for you! Feel free to create a thread and give us the details.

I like what you have done stacking six text boxes in the editor when I’ve never stacked more than two. But it might he that what you are trying to do could be done better via Fusion in Resolve 15. Have you looked into that option?

Hey Rick! I just got it last week and haven't had enough time to fully test it, but so far I am extremely happy. When I finish a project or two next week I will be sure to create that thread :)

As for Fusion, I have yet to try it out. That was one of the reasons I upgraded to this iMac pro. I wanted to be able to go into Fusion tab effortlessly. I need to watch a bunch of tutorials on it now to find out if what you are saying would work better.

Do you think that the multiple layers of text boxes are jamming up my computer somehow? And if so, where would it be jamming, even if its a hypothesis?

I've just run into this too - albeit on a much less powerful machine. Just doing a quick and dirty text intro, a few layers and resolve hated trying to play it. Apart from some keyframed windows there was nothing else going on.

don't know about "normal" - I just put it down to one of DR's quirks.

odd when I can run 12 nodes, NR, bla bla bla and have fine playback.

Remember any lag on playback will only occur on your Edit and possibly Colour pages. When you Deliver, your actual output will be perfect.

Although Fusion would give you superior results, you could work around this fairly easily and get back to smooth playback hopefully.

I assume with all those layered text boxes, each box is adding a single word that is static in your frame. So you could replace the stacked layers with one layer of a series of text thirds boxes.

To illustrate, the first text box begins at 01:00:01:00 for example with the word “YOU;” let’s give it a duration of 1 second. You drag the location of the text bounding box to where you want it. The second thirds box copies the first box and adds the “CAN’T” for another second duration. The third thirds box copies the second box and adds the “MAKE” for another second duration. The fourth box copies the third box and on a new line adds “E V E R Y B O D Y” for another second duration. The fifth box copies the fourth box. So far all the thirds boxes have the text font and size defined in the upper section via the Inspector. The fifth box will also use the lower box so you can change the font size and font and colour as you like for the word “H A P P Y.”

Think that will be easier than using Fusion? The great thing about using Fusion is the huge flexibility available to do so much more than simply have a status word appear in the frame.

Yes! This is what I’m talking about. I found it very strange. Thankfully its not the computer then I’m guessing. Hopefully someone from BM will chime in with some info, or maybe I’ll post today on the facebook page that seems to get more responses quickly sometimes.

Rick, the second time you said thirds but the first second thirds box the third time and i was thinking its too early i havent had tea yet haha. Im going to absorb what you said after when I’m at the office. Thank you in advance for the advice.

I’m not in Resolve to verify the terminology but the text boxes you have stacked are all probably very simple single text only titles such as you might have for the title of your video. The other type of text box is scrolling text that you would typically have at the end of the video to list your scrolling film credits. The other type of text boxes are called thirds in that they can support two different groupings of text and may appear, for example, in the lower third of your frame. But where the text grouping appears can be dragged anywhere in the frame. This might do the trick and easier to follow:

text one first line of the 1st thirds title clip (for example only placing the word in the top area in the Inspector):
You

text in 2nd thirds title clip:
You can’t

text in 3rd thirds title clip:
You can’t make

text in 4th thirds title clip:
You can’t make
E v e r y o n e <— this is entered on a new line still in the top area in the title Inspector

text in 5th thirds title clip
YOU CAN’T MAKE
E V E R Y O N E <— this is entered on a new line still in the top text area in the title Inspector
H A P P Y <— this is entered in the bottom text area in the title Inspector which allows allows you to vary the font, the size, the colour, add drop shadow, and so on.

If this isn’t clear I’m going to jump off a bridge!

PS I’ll be working in Resolve later after I shoot some clips with the URSA Mini 4.6K camera and might do it when editing if I have time!

Sorry haven’t been able to play with this stacking issue yet. I did a new video yesterday that stack two text boxes and didn’t notice anything unusual.
