Can't see video in media pool window??????

Hi
I am an absolute beginner - trying to set up Resolve on my desktop. I have it working on my laptop.

I have checked through the settings but cannot get the video to show in the media pool windows - any ideas?

I can play the vids via other programmes
The vids are mp4
Spec as attached
My graphics card is a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Resolve Free (i'll buy it if it works!) v15.0.0b.081

The settings between the two computers seem to be close.

PLEASE HELP or i have to use Adobe!!!

are the clips 10bit from a GH5? or EVA? the free version doesn't support 10bit files from these cameras.

can you give us some more info - like 1080,4k, camera , was it variable frame rate from a phone etc etc

Hi and thanks

As mentioned i have it working on my laptop so it isnt the file source or type.

But it is mp4 from a gopro 4 - 1080

I wouldn't actually know the rest of the info you ask - i'm just a regular guy who wants to create good videos for my son's holiday memories. Not a techno wizard.

My concern is i buy the software and i still can't use it!

jlo001, can you install MediaInfo and post screenshot with media info of your video? Select tree view, like this:

I've tested few Hero4 files from internet. Working fine with DR.
Sorry, I do not know why yours does not work.

As a last resort you can recode with HandBrake.
HQ 720p30 profile (your video 720p, not 1080p). Then, on Video tab set FPS to "Same as source".
Then try to open in Resolve.

I almost invariably need to convert the files I work with into a format that DR understands. These are MP4 from GoPro, DJI Mavic Pro and from a Panasonic TZ60. Unconverted files simple never show up at all in the media bin, they do AFTER conversion and then they're fully functional, i.e. they have proper preview etc.

I'm no CODEC expert, but I use ffmpeg (free software) to convert it to a PRORES codec. While that works well, the files you get after conversion are gi-normous, which creates a bit of a challenge keeping multiple projects around and even saving them for later use.

Perhaps someone can suggest a format that works but isn't quite the volume of PRORES?

There are a bunch of examples on this page here:
https://duduf.com/easily-transcode-any-media-to-any-format-using-ffmpeg/

I haven't quite worked out what the conversion does to embedded timecodes. I haven't looked into it that much, but I think that ffmpeg can embed them during the conversion too.

Thanks - would this still be the case if i bought the software?

It is not the files as they work on my laptop and i do not want to have to convert every clip i have from go pro.

Dunno ... I'm in the same boat as you, interested in buying the software and trying to learn how to use it. I think with the Studio version more formats are supported, at least you read sometimes that "... isn't supported in the free version".

Sadly, that's what I have to do. I'm on Linux so I've written a shell script that converts a whole directory, which is a relatively quick process and the greatest disadvantage is the file sizes.

I am using Studio version. Maybe this is the reason why everything works for me.

can you still post a link to a source clip for testing? :)

it could be - but it doesnt fill me with confidence paying for it to then find out it still doesnt work eh! the free version is supposed to entice you to buy the full version - that is how phone apps work; you wouldnt buy a phone app if the free one didnt work

Frustrating as i have a good spec desktop. £1500 Dell 8930.

Try to update by installing the latest versions for all drivers from HP web site.
For each driver installed: you reboot in the meantime.

Then you force wndows updates to have the latest updates

You reboot and you test.

If it still does not work after that: maybe contact HP support?

Maybe you could share a clip that doesn't work in WeTransfer or so . I'll be more than happy to see if it works for me (also on Free Version for the moment) or not and maybe someone with Studio could try the same. Then we'll all know! :)

I am able to run DJI Mavic footage (29.97, 1080p) without any transcode on my system as listed below.

Cheers - but I know it ISNT the clip, as it works in Resolve on my laptop - which is win10. The clip is fine. My other clips are fine. It must be a system setting or lack of something - i put the system spec up above.

This then points to a problem with your desktop. If you have not already done so, try re-installing Resolve. If there is still no joy then somewhere there is a configuration problem. My Dell is older than yours and has a less capable GPU but has no problem with these files.

Can't see it when I do "import media". Same with my own DJI footage (P3 4K and Mavic Pro) by the way. So I'd need to convert it with ffmpeg first.

It is possible that my system is more tolerable of variable frame rate which this clip is. Here are the details from MediaInfo.

Since Resolve is using hardware capabilities for decoding of most H.264 and H.265 clips, we may assume that there are differences in that implementation between systems.

Hello Charles (no problem),
I tested your clip and with a single node and a slight color correction (looping in the color tab):
- CPU 20%
- GPU0: 6%
- GPU1: 2%

Your clip is not a torture for PCs. If it is not seen for some PC is that the configuration is really not suitable for Davinci Resolve and request verification. :?
