System76 Meerkat for Resolve

PostMon Aug 13, 2018 4:20 pm

I have a 1 1/2 year old copy of Resolve from my BMMCC. I am about to replace my (broken) Imac with a System 76 Meerkat. Are there any suggestions or warnings about this? Thanks in advance

The GPU in the i5 and i7 versions (forget about the i3) will be ok for editing in HD with suitable codecs like ProRes/DNxHD/CineForm. But, the Color and Fusion pages will be very slow.

Thanks for the info. what resources does the color page use that are missing on the Meerkat? Is there a better option?

Resolve needs a fast GPU. System76 Meerkat desktops don't have a dedicated GPU, only what is built in into the Intel CPU.

As a reference from testing my new 2018 MacBook Pro:

LuxMark 3.1 LuxBall HDR score:

built in Intel UHD 630 1.5GB: 2,558
discrete AMD Radeon Pro 560X 4GB: 4,676

Keep in mind you'll be running the previous generation i7-7567U: Intel® Iris™ Plus Graphics 650 at best.

Just for a fun perspective, the Nvidia Titan V score: 51,142

Working with HD resolution ProRes and basic edits/coloring you will probably get by with enough patients. I will recommend a system with a dedicated GPU though.

All this said, I remember editing UHD ProRes on the fan-less MacBook (Intel HD Graphics 615) with Final Cut X. This is neither here nor there considering how optimized macOS/FCPX/ProRes are together versus Resolve on a PC. I was impressed nonetheless.

Resolve Studio 18 Beta | macOS 12.3.1
Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro, 10 core CPU, 32-core GPU, 64GB memory
Pro Display XDR | Micro Panel

Thanks for all the info. Just some background-I am not an editor, just a cinematographer. I am only hoping to review clips and play with timing/grading, and make some sample sequences.
