Resolve Studio 15 bugs that still haven't been fixed

PostWed Aug 15, 2018 6:48 pm

There are still 2 bugs that I've reported in the past:

1. With the Tangent Element control surface, with the Bt panel if you select menu B, then Window, then any of the window types (CPW, LPW, PPW, PCW), and then On/Off, it does not turn on that window. Instead it goes to the first frame of the shot. Sometimes it does work, but probably 90% of the time it doesn't. I don't know what the difference when it's working and not working. I reported this all the way back with Resolve 14 betas and it still hasn't been addressed.

2. Rendering an MP4 file from the Deliver page gives a file with the file extension hidden. This is annoying. I reported this with an earlier 15 beta, and it still hasn't been addressed.

I'm on a Mac.

Actually I'm seeing now that selecting the Premiere Pro roundtrip delivery preset also results in render files that have extensions hidden as well. Rendered as ProRes 4444. Please fix. Thank you.

Is the extension hidden or missing? If it's missing then it's a Resolve problem. If it's hidden, then it isn't.

The extension is hidden by MacOS, the typical Apple attitude of "We know best what you need to know".
If you go for the file info, it's clearly there. Not Resolve's fault.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The extension is hidden. It is a Resolve issue because it wasn't doing that on earlier releases. It started with beta 7 or beta 8. Nothing else changed on my computer except for the Resolve update.

Same here. I'm still getting Fusion crashes and I just discovered that for some reason some ordinary "Text" items disappear with a "Media offline" message while the clip itself IS present on the timeline and can even have its attributes changed (but not displayed). I reported some other issues too.

Is there a sub-forum where we can report bugs?

Hidden extension of mp4 exports is really an annoying bug.
I hope Blackmagic fix this.

It's not just .mp4. Getting it with ProRes 4444 .mov as well.

Oddly, an H264 .mov shows the extension, but the .mp4 does not.

Might just be a design decision, happens with ProRes files too. Older exports had the extension, newer ones do not.

I certainly like extensions to be hidden on master files, perhaps handy for mp4s to show it so you can tell they are compressed versions, but then there are other ways of knowing this also such as the file size (and h264s will of course share the same extension as ProRes masters so showing it for them would not get rid of any confusion).

FCP7 has the option on export for whether extensions will be shown, which alters whether this box in Get Info is ticked, perhaps Resolve could incorporate something similar.

I see zero benefit to hiding the extension, versus there being a benefit to showing the extension, so what is the reason for hiding it by default. Either give us the option or leave it the way it has been for all previous versions.

Just for information, is the button concerning process of interlaced fields ticked or not in you project ? If yes, did you try Fusion with it unticked ?

This is just because I had crashes too on beta 5 (or 6 or 7) and BMD told me to try without before final release. Now I don't have this problem anymore, with interlaced fields processing on too.

Here's a new one. When I import images into Resolve they look good on the Media page but when I import them into the timeline they look like crap, like a .gif from 1997. Never had that problem before. Anybody else?

No, works perfectly fine here on a large project I tackled when Dr15 went final.

But we may be able to help you if we get much more information:

– your hardware including GPU
– the format and codec of your media
– the format of your timeline
– any settings you changed from default settings for color handling

I have that too, many Fusion titles in Edit as well as many Fusion stuff crashes right away on Linux. I have no other OS so can't verify if it happens there. Sent logs to the DR15 Beta forum previously, but the issue remains.

Thank you @Tukcedo to confirm this
For fusion Shaders for me it is the onlyone which gives problem and same behavior in window and in OSX

Instead if I use different particle preset I have many problems in OSX.
In Windows instead all is pretty fine with particles presets

Maybe it is Nvidia drivers related
In windows latest drivers solved for my Titan Xp many problems with particles presets

Not sure if I should post here or if I should make a new thread about it, but is the fusion tab just completely unreliable?

I'm comping CG 32 bit EXR sequences in fusion, was hoping to keep all comps in the edit this way. But when I go to the colour page it's all black.

Also when doing any motion graphics, simple titles etc. I get frames dropping out, even on render....

I have to go back to fusion stand alone because I just can't afford time lost on buggy software.

Am I doing something wrong or is everyone else having the same thoughts?

Here is my process that has gone wrong today:

For my CG comps I've been dragging my render passes into the media browser

I can't drag my exr sequences into the timeline so I create a solid colour and convert to compound clip

then go into the fusion tab and swap the solid colour media in with my CG beauty pass and proceed to comp with all of the render elements. All seems fine.

I move to the colour tab and begin the colouring process. All looks fine until I scrub the timeline. The screen just goes black!!! Comp gone....

Then go back to the edit page, the scene shows up on a few frames if I'm lucky.

The issue with motion graphics is that random frames just go black....

See screen shots below...

One more bug. When exporting to .mp4 audio sounds like crap. Original .mp3 file is good as it can be with this compression, but when I export .mp4 (with .aac 192 kbs selected for audio export, because there is no other option - I don't see why I can't choose bitrate?) sound is awfull. I render same video and audio in Premiere Pro CC with all the same settings. Output sound is same as input. So I presume that must be some kind of bug in Resolve.
Sory, forgot to say. I'm still using DR beta 6 because I was in the middle of big project started with beta 6 and couldn't afford that luxus to try final version and (maybe) mess something because of this and that. Maybe this statement for beta version will sound stupid, but Murphy is always around :D

I've been exporting .mp4 video without audio issues and it defaults to 320kbps for audio. Maybe try that. Backup your project by exporting it to a drp file. Uninstall Resolve. Install Resolve 15 final. Upgrade database.

You can also try exporting to WAV, then convert to mp4 or mp3.

Thank you Mike, but as I said, I don't have time to reinstall DR and do some workarounds if something goes wrong. And it will. Because of tight deadline. And because of Murphy.
When I select .mp4 as output file, there is no option to change audio compression method. And that's ok. But I don't have an option to change bitrate. There is only one option - 192kbs It should be enough to not downgrade audio quality. But it does.
I can export to wav, and I did. Separately export video and audio and then join them together in .mp4 with Premiere Pro. And got perfect sound. But this is workaround. With app that have Fairlight embeded, this shouldn't happend. As soon as I got some air I'll post both sounds here and also reinstall DR to see what happens then. As I said, this could be some bug in beta 6.
I'm not blaming anyone. It was my decision to start big project with app in beta stage.

I have just exported an mp4 with AAC and 320 kbps from Resolve. Sounds good (I could have set more).
But maybe it's a Mac thing.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

PostTue Sep 04, 2018 1:01 am

Random crashing in renders with fusion comps on the timeline.

If i cant get through an 8 minute short i have no idea how we will employ this on our next show.

I really want to.

Crash log.

Upload your EXR or a sample of it somewhere and i will test it here to see if the issue is the same.
