Resolve 15 Fusion Crash when Adding Blur to Title

PostSat Aug 18, 2018 3:48 am

Here's what is for me a simple step by step process to cause Resolve 15 to crash on the Fusion page. I'd appreciate it if someone else can try this. It'll only take a couple of minutes.

Resolve Studio 15.0.0.086

Step 1: Create a new project, all settings at default.

Step 2: Add a 3D Lower 3rd Flipping 2Line Fusion title to the timeline. (*Note 1)

Step 3: Highlight the title clip and move to the Fusion tab.

Step 4: Add a Box Blur between the fusion comp and MediaOut1. (*Note 2)

Step 5: Set the Box Blur Strength to 0.

Step 6: Move to frame 95 and create a keyframe on the Box Blur's Horizontal Strength

Step 6: Click on frame 110 in the timeline. (*Note 3)

For me, Resolve crashes.

* Note 1: I've tried several Fusion titles with the same result.
* Note 2: I've also tried Gaussian Blur with the same result, but other OFXs and tools don't seem to cause this.
* Note 3: It doesn't matter which frame I move to.

I've just tested this procedure on my laptop and get the same failure.

Works fine here, everything functioning as expected.

That's very weird. I've tested it on 2 completely different machines.

Are you sure you follows the steps exactly?

Yes, I did, and even tried two other templates.
Maybe it’s a bug that only shows under Windows.

Adding blur to a lower thirds in fusion is not a problem on Beta7, which I dare say, seems to be more stable for me (it is very stable) than the 15 release, on windows (unsupported OS).

Can you try disable render and fusion cache? Does it still crash then?

That made no difference. The crash actually happens at the point I click on the keyframe button.

I find it amazing that no one else can duplicate this. It is 100% repeatable on 2 machines, one an i7 based laptop and the other my Threadripper based system.

On the AMD machine in particular, I have only just installed V15 so there would be pretty much no setup changes from the defaults.

Here are my logs, but I see nothing in them that I appears related to this problem.

OK, now I can confirm it, it happens here too.

Last time I checked I used the Blur from Fusion, not the Resolve version, and set it to Box. Having worked with Fusion before, I tend not to think much about the Resolve FX, but go for the familiar Fusion filters right away. That worked fine, so it's a workaround for now (same effect), but of course BM should fix that other filter.

I wonder how many other Resolve filters might show similar problems. I can confirm the bug for Gaussian Blur.

Maybe I'm not going mad after all. :)

I haven't really used Fusion at all apart from a couple of small plays with it. I'm reasonably conversant with After Effects, but Fusion works quite differently, so I've been putting off learning it until I have a project that needs it. I tend to learn best if I'm dropped into the deep end.

Discovering this came about because I wanted to blur the end of a title, but ran into a problem. This may be another bug, or perhaps simply I couldn't work it out.

I placed a Fusion title on the timeline and then added the Resolve box blur to it. Then I looked in the inspector thinking I'd find an OFX tab, but instead there were only 2 tabs, Fusion and Video. I couldn't find a way to get at the effect to make any adjustments.

This may just be my inexperience with Resolve.

Or perhaps putting effects on Fusion titles in the timeline should be blocked as it is on normal titles.

Who said you are going mad? There could always be a bug that exists only under one OS. It's quite a feat to develop software for Windows, since there are innumerable firmware and hardware configurations out there.

But this one exists under both systems obviously. So, for now, use the Blur filter from Fusion, set it to "Box" in it's first tab in the Inspector under "Filter" and call it a day.

Same problem here. I just updated Resolve from 15 to 15.3 and now the whole thing crashes if I go to the fusion tab. Also it seems to take a really long time to load.

Hi, I think I've found the solution (and the problem too).
You have to "ungang" horizontal and vertical in keyframing Gaussian Blur !!
:D
Can you confirm? Bye

In 16.1.2 I can't reproduce that bug any more, ganged or not.

OMG! I was having the same issue with DR crashing (going into not responding mode) every time I tried to set a keyframe on the horizontal for the Gaussian Blur. I just reloaded the app, unchecked Gang and BAM it works!!!

Thank you. I've been struggling with this for the last friggin' hour or so.
