Cache drive

PostMon Aug 20, 2018 5:33 pm

Hello BMF users, Any recommendations for a external ssd cache drive? And MB/s data rate speeds?

I will be mostly working in 4K timelines, on Resolve 15 using Red 6 and 8K, DNG, Pro Res, and Pro res raw source files.
Hardware is Imac Pro 10 core, 128gb DDR4 ram

Thanks.
Best, Rick

Does Resolve cache into timeline resolution or clip (optimised media to the clip most likely)?

For 4K you don't need huge speed if you use eg. ProResXQ. Single SSD (eg 540MB/sec) is on the edge of 4K DCI 60p. ProResXQ is near lossless, but it will require CPU for decoding.
If you go uncompressed 10bit then this is 2.1GB/sec for 4K DCI 60p (note that then you at 10bit, so maybe for some RED footage is not optimal).
16bit uncompressed takes into speeds which external drives starts to fail, due to connection restrictions. 4K DCI 60p 16bit is 3.2GB/sec, so close to TB3 bandwidth. (around 3.5GB/sec in reality).
There should be 12bit RGB uncompressed option (16bit is overkill) in place of 10bit RGB.

Hey Andrew, Yes clip cache most of the time and Pro Res XQ renders. Cool anything faster than 540mb/s
there are a lot of choices for me in drives.

Thanks man
