Support for audio ducking - any instructions on this yet?

PostThu Sep 20, 2018 3:51 am

I know where it is located, but unsure how to implement it.

I assume we choose the tracks we want to use, and choose "listen". But then what?

My apologies ahead of time for any ignorance on the subject :)

From viewtopic.php?f=21&t=79204

Performing Audio Ducking using Sidechain
DaVinci Resolve now supports automatic audio ducking using sidechain in the Fairlight page Dynamics effect.

Enable “Send” in the track dynamics compression section on one of multiple tracks where you would like to emphasize or prioritize the audio. Then enable Compression and “Listen” on all the tracks you would like to compress or duck. The threshold and ratio can be adjusted in the compression settings to modify the amount of compression in the signal.

I just started using this feature and it seems to work ok. I am wondering though. Is it possible to group a bunch of tracks and listen? Currently I have a bunch of tracks tied to a sub mix, but it is not possible to listen from that sub mix.

Using C6 Sidechain - Target: Vocal Track

1) Create an AUX channel -
- Add C6 on the strip
-> c6 Enable External
-> set frequency + Q size etc.
Tune your attack, gain, release etc. (later)

-> (Channel Strip) Toggle Main channel off; do not send to main.

2) Channel Strips:
Vocal Strip-> Dynamics ->Enable Compressor -> Enable Send..
On all the other tracks that you would like the vocal to override
... > Dynamics ->Enable Compressor -> Enable Listen..
Enabling main on the strip could affect the effectiveness based on your configuration; may be
wise to toggle it off until the base compression is working the way that you want it.

3) Channel Strips:
Enable the Aux channel - Turn on the AUX channel on all the channels that you are using and
set the send level. 0 is a good starting point.

Now open the C6 VST in the AUX strip .. start playing the clip and you should see the meters responding to the vocals.

Probably best to create a separate thread for slightly different questions, but I was also trying out the audio ducking feature so tried out what you were trying. Just go in to each of the tracks that are in the sub and click send
so like

Dialogue Track 1 (click send in compressor) -> Sub1
Dialogue Track 2 (click send in compressor) -> Sub1
Music Track 3 -> Main1
Sub1 -> Main1
Main 1 (Click listen in compressor)

Ah ok thanks, I had it backwards. Glad to hear that you can get it to work!

If they read this thread, they may consider adding the send button to the sub channel, but I know very little about audio and there might be a logical/technical reason for doing it the way they did it. I initially was thinking the way you were.

This unfortunately doesn't work for me in v16...
